Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group , Namatamai District , New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa east to Mariana Islands and Fiji, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary or in small groups in the vicinity of reefs, 20–120 m depth. Marine.
