Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kulineua River, New Hanover by Munro (1958: 179), subsequently reported from Lihir Group, Namatamai District by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey, and by Barry C. Russell on 28 June 2014. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District by Dietmar Amon on 10 May 2009; another by Dean Tully on 18 Sept. 2012.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Panama, north to Ryukyu and Hawaiian islands, south to northern Australia, New Caledonia and Austral Islands. Found over sand bottom near seaward coral reefs; juveniles live among the tentacles of jellyfish, 0–80 m depth. Marine.
