Material examined: 31 specimens, including the type at AMNH.

Diagnosis: Tragidion dichromaticum is similar to T. bicolor , however, only the females of either species can be confused. The male of T. dichromaticum is quite distinct in the genus, and cannot be confused with any other species. Females of T. dichromaticum can be separated from T. bicolor by the more distinctly spined antennae of which the apex of antennomere 3 forms a spine; the slightly broader basal black band which is confined to the humeral margin; the bright metallic blue reflections of the ventral surface and metatibiae; and the more abruptly expanded metatibiae which are more densely pubescent.

As its name implies, this species is strongly sexually dichromatic; the females have a black integument and bright orange elytra. The males have two color forms; one with the integument and elytra gray-black with brown antennae, the other with a brown integument and tan-brown elytra. There seems to be no correlation between geography and the color forms. Both varieties have been taken in the same areas and separate taxonomic recognition does not seem warranted.

Distribution ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 E). Southwestern Mexico, including the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Jalisco.

Ecology. Little is known of biology and life history of this species. Most specimens have been taken advantageously either flying in forest openings or on vegetation.
