— Kiesling (1984) and Rodríguez et al. (2018) placed Tephrocactus nigrispinus (K.Schum.) Backeb. within the genus Maihueniopsis . This assumption was not supported by molecular studies ( Wallace & Dickie 2002, Griffith & Porter 2009, Ritz et al. 2012).
