Primocane ( Figs 19A–C View FIGURE 19 ) up to 2 m high, arching, angular, furrowed, diam. 3–7 mm, slightly to rather densely appressed hairy, with (sub-)sessile glands; prickles 3–14 per 5 cm from 1–5 mm base declining, 4–8 mm long; stipules linear, 6– 10 mm long, with some hairs and subsessile glands. Leaves palmate 5-foliolate, adaxially (almost) glabrous, abaxially ( Fig. 19D View FIGURE 19 ) green, with usually rather dense short hairs, sometimes only slightly hairy, not to clearly soft at touch; serrature sharp, coarse, double, with straight teeth; petiole 3–6 cm, appressed pilose, with 2–8 curved prickles; central leaflet 60–110 mm long, with rounded or attenuate base, narrow, elliptic or obovate, rather abruptly attenuate into moderate or long tip, width–length index 0.44–0.59, length of petiolule 16–32% of length of leaflet. Flowering branch angular, furrowed, with more or less appressed hairs and few (sub-)sessile glands; prickles 2–7 per 5 cm, declining or curved, slender, somewhat compressed, up to 3–5 mm long. Leaves acute, coarsely sharp serrate, adaxially glabrous, abaxially thinly hairy, not soft to touch. Inflorescence ( Figs 9E–F View FIGURE 9 ) axillary, leafy, with 5–9 flowers on ascending pedicels, rarely compound and lax with long ascending pedicels; pedicels ( Fig. 19G View FIGURE 19 ) ascendant, 5–45 mm long, green, with appressed hairs, 0–5 pricklets, and few (sub-)sessile glands. Flowers: sepals green, with white margin, patent, moderately or long pointed; petals ( Fig. 19H View FIGURE 19 ) white, large, broad ovate or orbicular, 16–23 mm long, width–length index 0.57–1.00; stamens longer than styles; anthers glabrous; styles green; ovaries and receptacle hairy.

Ecology: —Roadsides, hedges, ruderal terrains.

Distribution in South Africa: —In the Western Cape only in Simondium; rather common in northern KwaZulu-Natal; also at some localities in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
