Description. Forewings 1.8 times longer than wide, length in male 4.6–4.9 mm (mean = 4.8, n= 4). Colour stramineous to orange; brightest orange on facial carinae and clypeus; abdomen light brown, slightly tinted with orange. Forewings not powdered; faintly yellowish-brown with clear areas at base of Cu1, between Ms1a and Ms2, as well as before - and after apical cross-veins; infuscated around 2nd subcostal sector; orange-brown around last subcostal sector; veins stramineous, but last subcostal sector, apex of Sc, and apical cross-vein between R and Sc orange; in one paratype apical parts of R and M tinted with orange. Hindwings with two large contiguous brownblack marks in posterior apical corner; the larger mark with a small white dot and its basal margin irregular; rest of hindwings lightly infuscated, but area basad of marks and clavus colourless; the clear areas inside and before the black marks may be covered with white powder; apical parts of veins red, except for Sc and R. Facial carinae contiguous at their bases; rostrum short, not quite reaching hind coxae; subantennal processes very small; lateral carinae of pronotum poorly developed. Forewings with costal margin slightly -, apical part of Sc strongly sinuate; Sc+R fork in basal third of wing; Ms1 branches slightly before its middle; Ms1b touches the apical part of Cu1; a small triangle at base of Ms1. Pygofer of male genitalia with large, lateral projections, curved downwards; genital styles long. Apical part of aedeagus ending in two large lobes, the right one partly overlapping the left one, a small emargination on the ventral side of the left lobe.

Etymology. The species is named for the collector, K.J. Kuncheria, and ' kuncheriai ' is a latinized noun used in the genitive case.

Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 4.9 mm, body 2.7 mm), MALAYSIA: NORTH BORNEO; labels: 1) NORTH BORNEO ( SE)/ Forest Camp , 19 km / N. of Kalabakan / 60m, 27.X.1962 2) K.J. Kuncheria / Collector / BISHOP ( BPBM) . Paratypes. MALAYSIA : NORTH BORNEO, same data as holotype 2 ♂ (fw. 2x4.6), (one 14.X.1962), Y. Hirashima ( BPBM). WEST MALAYSIA: Pahang, F.M. S., Pelcan , 1 ♂ (fw. 4.9), 25.IV.1939, H.M. Pendlebury ( BMNH) .

Distribution. North Borneo, West Malaysia.

Diagnosis. Rhotana kuncheriai resembles R. excelsa Melichar and R. mindanaoensis Zelazny , both from the Philippines. It can be distinguished from these by the forewings lacking any larger red areas, by the shape of the hindwing marks, and by the male aedeagus lacking a hook-like tip.
