The new species is easily distinguished from Pseudharpinia dentata by antenna 1, article 1 of peduncle dorsally setulose; antenna 2 article 4, row of facial stout setae ending in a papose stout seta, palp of mandible, ventral margin of article 2 with a mid-length pair of setae, and article 3, with setae only ventrodistally; pereopod 4, coxa with posterior margin rounded and ventral margin with two small anterior plumose setae; pereopod 5, basis more robust than in P. dentata ; pereopod 6, anterior and posterior margins of basis poorly setose and without setae, respectively; pereopod 7, posterior margin of basis without elongated setae between spines; uropod 3, second article of outer ramus 0.4 times the first article length. Pseudharpinia dentata is characterized by antenna 1, article 1 of peduncle without setae dorsally; palp of mandible, ventral margin of article 2 without mid-length setae, and article 3, ventral margin with setae from the medial part to the apex; pereopod 4, coxa with posterior margin subquadrate and ventral margin setose; pereopod 5, basis slender; pereopod 6, anterior and posterior margins of basis densely setose; pereopod 7, posterior margin of basis with elongated setae between spines; and uropod 3, article 2 of outer ramus reduced.

The only species of the genus Pseudharpinia previously recorded from Brazilian waters, P. affinis dentata , among material collected from the south-western Brazilian shelf, off São Paulo State coast, shares with P. dentata almost all the character states listed above, and is also easily separated from P. berardo sp. nov.
