Male: Body length: 3.2–3.5mm. Wing length: 3.7–4.2mm. Flagellum dark brown. Frons brown pollinose. Eyes meeting for about length of frons or less (13–15 facets). Occiput grey pollinose in lower and brown pollinose in upper half, the latter can occ. be restricted to area posterior to ocellar triangle. Postpronotal lobe dark brown. Prescutum and scutum brown pollinose. Posterior hair fringe of scutellum with about twelve evenly spaced hairs. Pleura grey pollinose or with anepimeron partly brown pollinose. Subscutellum grey pollinose, but some weak brown pollinosity can be present in upper lateral corners. LTC about 0.9–1.2 times LFC. Trochanter dark. Femur with base (optionally) and apex narrowly yellow. Hind femur not concave in ventrobasal half ( Fig. 82 View FIGURES 74 – 83 ). Tibia yellowish in basal quarter to third. Tarsi brownish with distitarsi darkest. Pulvilli of front legs slightly shorter than distitarsi. Tergites 1–4 laterally with small triangular spots of grey pollinosity, dorsally entirely brown pollinose. Surstyli in lateral view with hardly bent apex, almost straight ( Figs 20–21 View FIGURES 15 – 21 ). Only two of the three ejaculatory ducts are evenly sclerotized in their distal half.

Female: Body length: 3.1–3.8mm. Wing length: 3.8–4.1mm. Flagellum dark brown. Frons with upper half or third entirely or almost entirely shining, otherwise grey. Postpronotal lobe yellowish to dark brown. Prescutum and scutum grey pollinose in anterior quarter to third, laterally down to wing base, otherwise brown pollinose. Pleura and subscutellum grey pollinose. LTC about 0.9–1.1 times LFC. Trochanter yellowish brown. Femur with base and apex narrowly yellow. Base can be also dark. Tibia yellowish, but darkened ventrally in apical two thirds and dorsally towards apex. Tarsi yellowish brown with distitarsi darkest. Pulvilli of front legs as long as or only slightly longer than distitarsi. Laterally, tergites 1–6 grey pollinose. Tergite 1 anterodorsally brown, otherwise grey pollinose. Tergite 2 dorsally greyish-brown pollinose to various extend, otherwise shining. Tergites 3–6 shining dorsally or tergite 3 narrowly brown pollinose along anterior margin. Ovipositor in lateral view with rather short, weakly curved piercer (can even be shorter than figured). Transition from base to piercer with ventral step ( Fig. 65 View FIGURES 55 – 66 ).

Annotations: Pipunculus pumilionis Kuznetzov, 1991 described from material collected in the Far East of Russia on Shikotan Island (Kuril Islands) seems to stand very close to P. fonsecai , judging from the figures provided in the original description.
