This species is widespread throughout boreal North America View in CoL , from Alaska to the northeastern US, and south into the higher elevations of southern California and northern New Mexico. The species P. frosti Casey View in CoL was not treated by Linsley (1964) and has not been listed in Monné et al. (2008), or any other catalogue. The type at the USNM is identical to P. dimidiatus View in CoL . Phymatodes dimidiatus View in CoL displays little regional variation, with the exception of populations in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, which are entirely dark brown, superficially resembling P. lecontei Linsley View in CoL (= P. grandis Casey View in CoL ).
