= Bacteria pan Redtenbacher, 1908: 420 View in CoL . HT, ♀: Guyana [SMNS—not traced]. syn. n.

Remarks: Examination of all type specimens has shown that the insect illustrated by Stoll (1787, plate 14: 55) is the same species illustrated on plate 13, figure 51 of the same work. Consequently, Mantis squeleton Olivier, 1792 and the junior objective synonym Phasma simplex Stoll, 1813: 45 are synonyms of P. baculus ( Olivier, 1792, syn. n.). Unfortunately the type-specimen of Bacteria pan Redtenbacher, 1908 from “ Guyana ”, perhaps a penultimate instar nymph, is not traced in the collection of SMNS. The brief original description and type-locality place it close to P.baculus (Olivier, 1793) . Although slightly smaller (body length 135.0 mm, according to Redtenbacher, 1908: 421), the description as well as the length proportions of the body and legs match perfectly with the ♀ from Guyana in the collection of NHMUK (body length 158.5 mm). Thus, Redtenbacher’s species is here synonymised (syn. n.).

Distribution: “South America” [RMNH]; Guyana “ British Guiana ” [NHMUK]; Guyana [SMNS—lost]; Suriname, Galabi, Maronyne [NHMUK].
