Type (holotype):— SOUTH AFRICA, [Northern Cape], Karroofläche südostlich Calvinia [QDS: 3119DB], 800–900 m, 15 September 1900, Diels 696 (B! No. 100089226 [image])

= Spiloxene namaquana Müller-Doblies et al. (2011: 326) View in CoL . Type (holotype):— SOUTH AFRICA. Northern Cape, Grootvlei, ca. 3.5 km Wof N7 (from the T-junction 5 km Sof Kamieskroon) (QDS: 3017 BB), ca. 750 m, 19 August 1988, Müller-Doblies 88110c (PRE, isotypes B, BTU, G, K, KMG, LD, M, NBG, WIND, Z)

Plants (3.5–) 7–30 cm tall. Corm covered with pale brown fibrous tunics or rarely just distally; roots spreading down from near corm base or occasionally tangled around corm, epidermis often felt-like. Leaves 3–9, linear, 1–6 mm wide. Flower 13–30 mm across, tepals bright yellow or rarely orange, backs of outer whorl entirely green and usually outlined with reddish brown, those of inner whorl with a plain green, broad, median stripe, anthers and style yellow. Flowering period: (late May–)June–September(–November at high elevations).

Distribution and habitat:—The widespread Pauridia serrata subsp. serrata extends from the high-lying areas of northern Namaqualand west of Steinkopf, through the Kamiesberg, the Kubiskou Mountains northwest of Loeriesfontein, the Bokkeveld Mountains, the Hantam and the Roggeveld Escarpment, Northern Cape, and southwards into Western Cape ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 ). Here the species reaches southwards to the coastal forelands as far as the Cape Peninsula and Gordon’s Bay. Populations of scattered plants are found in a variety of soils derived from granites, shale and dolerite. Although localized to seasonally wet areas the plants invariably grow in full sun.

Diagnostic features:—The vegetative features discussed for this species are similar in both subspecies, except that Pauridia serrata subsp. serrata occasionally has corms loosely entangled by felt-like roots and capped by short fibrous tunics distally. The flowers are uniformly yellow in colour, although rare orange-flowered plants are known from the northern parts of the Bokkeveld Escarpment around the Farm Biekoes.
