Diagnosis: This species is the only species in Nyctiophylax (s.str.) having an open forewing median cell. The species is most similar to N. (N.) sinensis Brauer , from which it is distinguished by having cerci divided into lobes and sternite IX with posterior margin straight and vertical.

Description: Male. Body uniformly pale brown. Maxillary palp formula (I,II)-IV-III-V. Forewing length 4.0 mm. Median cell on forewings open.

Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX composed of robust, sclerotized sternite, nearly triangular, about 2 times higher than long, posterior margin straight and vertical in lateral view ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 64–68 ); tergum IX indiscernible as membranous integument above sternite IX and behind segment X. Segment X semisclerotized, setose, elongate, connected to dorsal angles of sternite IX ( Fig. 64 View FIGURES 64–68 ); deeply incised, producing large quadrangular dorsal interlobular gap with rod-like lateral lobes in dorsal view ( Fig. 65 View FIGURES 64–68 ). Cerci large, long, tall, setose, each divided into 1 dorsal, 2 apical and 1 ventral lobes in lateral view. Paraproctal complexes each consisting of 2 paraproctal processes; 1 dorsally arching spine originating anteriorly, 1 starting from its fulcrum (meeting point of sternite IX, cercus and segment X) and running almost vertically ventrad to end between bases of gonopods. Gonopods robust, oriented almost horizontally, elongate, basal part sinuous. Phallic apparatus ( Figs. 67, 68 View FIGURES 64–68 ) located dorsally in genitalia, guided by spine-like, long paraproctal processes; phallic apparatus with tube-shaped, sclerotized phallotheca continuing into membranous endotheca (or endophallus) with pair of sclerites on retracted membranes, these sclerites ending in laterad-directed, spiny apices in dorsal view ( Fig. 68 View FIGURES 64–68 ).

Holotype male: VIETNAM: Hanoi, West Lake , 28.x.1986, light [J. Oláh]—( OPC).

Paratype: same data as holotype— 1 female ( OPC) .

Distribution: Vietnam.

Etymology: Hotay, derived from ”phuong tay”, meaning west, and “cai ho”, meaning lake in Vietnamese, named after the type locality.

Remarks: An open median cell is only present in species in a few polycentropodid genera of the diagnostic genus clusters with simple wing venation, like Cyrnellus , Adectophylax , Cernotina , Pahamunaya . Neboiss (1994) has found 3 Nyctiophylax (Paranyctiophylax) species from Australia and recently Johanson & Ward (2009) have found 4 new Polyplectropus species from New Caledonia with an open median cell in each forewing.
