Description. Adult ( Figs 11–13 View FIGURES 11 – 20 ): Wingspan 14.5–16.0 mm. Head grey mottled with black, frons slightly lighter, off-white; labial palpus upcurved, boths segments black, mixed with grey, upper surface light, nearly white, underside of segment 2 without groove, segment 3 about half length and nearly as wide as segment 3; thorax black, middle part brown; tegulae black; forewing separated by sinuous longitidinal stripe into light brown dorsal and dark, greyish-black costal parts, three black spots in cell – the one at the border between light and dark parts and two others within dark part with brown scales betwen them, light brown scales randomly spread over the wing, forming two streaks under costal margin at 1/4 and 3/4 length, subapical fascia light brown, cilia grey black-tipped; hindwing light grey.

Variation. Head varies from dark, almost black to off-white.

Male genitalia ( Figs 39–41 View FIGURES 36 – 41 ): Uncus slightly longer than broad, gradually narrowed apically, apex rounded; gnathos slender, of equal width, sickle-shaped; tegumen comparatively long, anteromedial emargination as broader as long, extending to about 2/5–1/2 length of tegumen; valva slender, of equal width, apex distinctly inflated, top rounded, reaching the top of uncus; sacculus about 1/3 length of valva, slender, apex weakly inflated, of equal width, separated from viuncular processes by broad gap; posterior margin of vinculum with moderately deep medial emargination, vincular process prolonged, reaching to 3/4 length of sacculus, covered with short setae in apical part, separated by V-shaped medial incision; saccus broad, triangular, slightly exceeds the top of pedunculus; caecum slightly swallen, distal portion tapered, apical arm cockscomb-shaped, crescent cornutus present, lamina well developed.

Variation. Valva varies in width.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 57 View FIGURES 57 – 59 ): Papilla analis ovate, covered with short setae; apophyses posteriores slender, more than four times longer than segment VIII, sternite VIII twice longer than broad, weakly narrowed posteriorely after one half length, subgenital plate narrow, prolonged, without modification, anteriorely with short medial projections, ventomedial depression prolonged, posteriorely weakly sclerotized and without modification, anteriorely with two rouneded sclerites near the ostium, ostium opening indistinct; apophyses anteriores distinctly shorter than segment VIII, antrum long, lateral sclerotization extending to nearly the entrance of corpus bursae; ductus bursae tubular, slightly longer than apophyses anteriores; corpus bursae pyriform, signum horn-shaped, long, weakly curved, with four small and three large basal teeth.

Remarks. The species resembles externally K. (E.) montana sp. n., but differs in usually larger size, dark rather than light subapical area and more or less developed subapical fascia. The male genitalia resemble those of K. (E.) centrica sp. n., but differ in the longer sacculus, the narrower vincular processes, the shorter valva that not extend over the top of uncus and the shorter saccus. The cockscomb-shaped arm in the phallus seems to be additional character for separating K. (E.) septentrionala sp. n. from the rest of the Palaearctic Kiwaia -species. For differences from K. (E.) nyingchiensis sp. n. see under that species. The female genitalia are similar to those of K. (E.) centrica sp. n., but can easily be recognized by antrum with long lateral sclerotization, long horn-shaped signum and rounded subostial sclerites.

Biology. Host plant unknown. Adults have been collected in July-August at altitudes from 1196 m to 2130 m.

Distribution. China (Gansu, Ningxia, Shanxi, Sichuan).

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin septentrional (northern) and the suffix -us, in reference to the distribution.
