Heterachthes skillmani View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs 7–9 View FIGURES 7 – 11. 7 – 9 )

Coloration. Frons dark reddish-brown; ventral side of head reddish-brown, except for wide yellowish-brown area on base of gula; remaining surface of head dark-brown; scape and pedicel dark reddish-brown; antennomeres III– XI light reddish-brown; pronotum and lateral sides of prothorax mostly dark-brown, dark reddish-brown anteriorly; ventral side of pro, meso- and metathorax reddish-brown; elytra dark reddish-brown on base and along basal half of suture, dark-brown on remaining surface, except for two yellow macula on each elytron: one placed laterally on middle of dorsal basal half, subelliptical; one placed at beginning of distal half, oblique, from lateral margin to near suture. Legs reddish-brown with areas slightly darker, mainly on tibiae. Abdominal ventrites dark reddish-brown.

Head. Frons centrally tumid; coarsely, abundantly, confluently punctate (punctures transverse) on tumid area, except for central subsmooth area close to clypeus; coarsely, abundantly, confluently punctate (punctures longitudinal) outside of tumid area; with very short and sparse setae. Area between antennal tubercles coarsely, confluently punctate. Area between antennal tubercles and upper eye lobes, moderately coarsely punctate centrally, smooth laterally. Area between anterior margin of upper eye lobes and about middle of vertex coarsely, confluently punctate (punctures notably coarser than on frons); area of vertex closer to prothorax finely, densely vermiculate. Area behind upper eye lobes coarsely, confluently punctate close to eye, finely, densely vermiculate toward prothoracic margin; with short, sparse setae close to eye, interspersed with some long setae. Area behind lower eye lobes tumid close to eye; coarsely, sparsely punctate on tumid area, moderately coarsely, abundantly punctate close to prothoracic margin (punctures distinctly finer than on tumid area), smooth between punctate areas. Antennal tubercles elevated, subacuminate at apex; sculpture as on sides of frons. Longitudinal sulcus distinct from near clypeus to area between upper eye lobes. Submentum coarsely, transversely striate, with fine, sparse punctures between striae; with short, sparse setae interspersed with long, erect setae. Genae coarsely, abundantly punctate close to eye, finely punctate close to apex; with short, sparse setae. Distance between upper eye lobes 0.5 times length of scape; distance between lower eye lobes in frontal view 0.8 times length of scape. Antennae 2.3 times elytral length (left antenna missing antennomeres IX–XI and part of VIII), reaching elytral apex about middle of antennomere VIII; antennomeres III–VI somewhat tumid; antennomeres III–VII with long, erect setae, mainly ventrally (sparser from III to VII); antennomeres VIII–X with long setae at apex; antennal formula (ratio) based on antennomere III: scape = 0.54; pedicel = 0.10; IV = 0.63; V = 0.75; VI = 0.85; VII = 0.84; VIII = 0.82; IX = 0.73; X = 0.67; XI = 0.81.

Thorax. Prothorax 1.4 times longer than wide; laterally rounded at middle. Pronotal disc laterally with conical, slightly elevated tubercle on anterior half; with sparse, coarse and fine punctures; with narrow, transverse band of white pubescence on base, oblique band of white pubescence on each side of anterior third; remaining surface with very short and sparse setae intersperse with long, erect setae. Sides of prothorax coarsely, sparsely punctate, except for striated area close to anterior margin, preceded by tumid, oblique area, narrowed toward pronotum; with transverse band of white pubescence from base to tumid area; remaining surface with long, sparse setae. Prosternum minutely, abundantly punctate on basal half (sparser on central longitudinal area), laterally smooth; smooth on anterior third; finely striate with sparse punctures between basal half and anterior third; pubescent on basal half (not obscuring integument), except on glabrous smooth area, with short, sparse setae on anterior half. Ventral side of mesothorax with white pubescence, not obscuring integument. Metepisterna with white pubescence. Metasternum finely, sparsely punctate, with coarse, sparse punctures between lateral side and center; laterally pubescent, interspersed with long, erect setae; with short, sparse setae interspersed with long, erect, sparse setae between sides and center; with sparse setae centrally. Scutellum margined by fringe of very small setae.

Elytra. Finely, sparsely punctate, interspersed with 3 rows of coarse punctures; with long, erect, sparse, yellow setae, aligned in rows between basal and distal quarter; apex truncate.

Legs. Femora finely pubescent, interspersed with long, erect setae. Metatarsomere I about as long as II–III together; missing right protarsus.

Abdomen. Ventrites I–IV finely, sparsely punctate (missing ventrite V); with white pubescence, not obscuring integument, interspersed with long, erect, yellow setae.

Dimensions (mm). Total length (including mandibles), 12.20; prothoracic length, 2.50; anterior prothoracic width, 1.65; basal prothoracic width, 1.65; largest prothoracic width, 1.80; humeral width, 2.40; elytral length, 7.80.

Type material. Holotype male from MEXICO, Jalisco: Melaque (Pemex), 22.VII.2006, Skillman & Hildebrant col. ( USNM).

Etymology. We name this species for Frederick W. Skillman, Jr., for his friendship and for sending material for study.

Remarks. Heterachthes skillmani sp. nov. differs from H. hildebranti sp. nov., mainly as follows: frons centrally tumid, with smooth area close to the clypeus; pronotal punctures close to the tubercles sparser; pronotum somewhat slender and longer; scutellum not pubescent; elytral setae distinctly sparser on distal third. In H. hildebranti (male and female) the frons is not centrally tumid and has not smooth area close to the clypeus, the pronotal punctures close to tubercles are denser, the pronotum is shorter and slightly wider, the scutellum is pubescent, and the elytral setae are distinctly more abundant on distal third.
