10. Hemipenthes incisiva (Painter)

Villa (Hemipenthes) incisiva Painter in Painter and Painter, 1962: 112 [new replacement name for incisa Walker, 1852 ]. Hemipenthes incisa (Walker) : Hull, 1973: 385.

Holotype female in BMNH.

Diagnosis: Face bluntly projecting; proepimeron pilosity black; mesopleuron mixed black and yellow pilose; sides of first abdominal tergite black pilose; fifth abdominal tergite with black scales; white tomentum on dorsum and sides of sixth and seventh tergites.

Description: Male. Body length: 11 mm; wing length: 10 mm. Head: Eyes separated by twice width of ocellar triangle. Front black pilose, fulvous tomentose. Face fulvous, bluntly projecting, with black hairs and fulvous tomentum. Scape fulvous, swollen on inner apical margin, with black hairs, twice as long as pedicel; pedicel brown, twice as wide as long, with short black hairs in dorsal portion, bare in ventral portion; flagellomere brown, longer than scape and pedicel combined; base subconical, tapering to styliform apical two-thirds; stylus minute, terminal. Proboscis short, not projecting beyond oral margin. Palpi brown with black hairs. Occiput with short yellowish hairs and yellowish scales.

Thorax: Mesonotum anterior margin yellowish pilose; lateral margin entirely black pilose; tomentum on disc whitish and black; bristles black. Mesopleuron black pilose with yellowish hairs mixed in on proepisternum and anepisternum, katatergite with white and black hairs, katepisternum not tomentose, black pilose. Proepimeron with black hairs. Mid coxa with mixed black and ferruginous hairs, coxae not tomentose. Legs fulvous, femora black pilose and tomentose; bristles black. Halter steam and knob yellow. Scutellum brown, black pilose, and black tomentose; bristles black. Black setulae on basicosta. Cells c, br, bm and a entirely infuscated (Fig. 11); cells sc and cup entirely infuscated except tip; cell r1with basal half infuscated; cells dm and cua1 with basal third infuscated; cells r2+3, r5 and m2 infuscated just at base; cell dm infuscated at r-m crossvein; r-m crossvein at or slightly behind middle of cell dm; no crossvein between R4 and R2+3; cell r5 not narrowed at wing margin; first section of vein CuA1 one and a half the long of r-m crossvein, second section twice the long of r-m crossvein, third section one and a half the long of first two sections combined; cell a slightly wider than cell cup; alula slightly developed.

Abdomen: Abdominal dorsum black pilose; black tomentum overall, white tomentum on dorsum and sides of sixth and seventh tergites; sides of abdomen with first to fifth tergites with black hairs, rest not pilose. Venter black pilose, black tomentose with white scales on seventh sternite. Genitalia cinereous, fulvous at apex, with white hairs. Epandrium in lateral view, rectangular, lower apical margin prolonged posteriorly, lower margin concave in middle, basal corner narrowed; gonocoxite narrow, basal half enlarged, apex prolonged ventrally; gonostylus large, as long as half the width of the gonocoxite, hooked apically; epiphallus in lateral view broad ( Fig. 51 ) slightly curved, cap-shaped, apex not swollen, rounded; with a ventral extension broad at base with apex acuminate, portion of the epiphallus behind ventral extension as long as aedeagus; epiphallus in ventral view broad ( Fig. 52 ), lateral margins straight, with scattered spines all along; aedeagus broad at base narrowed at apex, not swollen dorsally; gonopore terminal.

Female. Not reviewed.

Distribution: Mexico (Guerrero, Puebla).

Specimens examined: Mexico: Guerrero: Taxco, 10-X-1936, H. D. Thomas (1 male genitalia; USNM).

Remarks: Only one male from Hemipenthes incisiva were examined. The genitalia has a broad epiphallus in lateral view, a characteristic only shared with H. albus . This may be one of the less common species within the genus. Hemipenthes incisiva has a disjunct distribution being present in Puebla and Guerrero in Mexico. I cannot say if this disjunct distribution is real or an effect of the rarity or difficulty to collect this species. Only with intensive collection in the center of Mexico the distribution of this species will become known.
