Epipleoneura haroldoi Santos, 1964 View in CoL

( Figs. 22 View FIGURES 22 – 24 , 47 View FIGURES 28 – 47 , 55 View FIGURES 53 – 66 )

Epipleoneura haroldoi Santos, 1964: 41 View in CoL , 42, figs. 4–6. 9, 12, 14, 15 (new species, description of male and female, illustration of S 10 in dorsal and lateral view, detail of epiproct in posterior view, genital ligula in ectal view, male and female posterior lobe of prothorax in dorsal view, type material at MNRJ). De Marmels 1989: 20 (new record for Venezuela). Lencioni 2005: 175, figs. 105 a–f (references, type locality, distribution, described stages, reproduction of original illustrations of male S 10 in lateral and dorsal view, epiproct and prothorax in dorsal view, genital ligula in ectal and lateral view and female prothorax and pterothorax in dorsal view). Garrison et al. 2010: 352 –354, figs. 2322, 2323, 2330, 2331, 2337 (included in list of species, illustrations of genital ligula in ectal and lateral view, S 10 in lateral and postero-dorsal view and epiproct in posterior view). Pessacq et al. 2012: 4 (included in list of Brazilian Protoneuridae View in CoL ).

Specimens examined. 2♂, 1 ♀. Holotype ♂ and allotype ♀, 1 ♂ paratype, Brazil, Amazonas State, Manaus, small stream Igarapé do Mariano (Manaus: 03º07’08”S, 60º01’32”W), leg. Elias, ii 1959.

Color pattern (not described in Santos 1964): Female: Head: Dorsally metallic green; dorsal half of anterior side black, ventral half yellow, antennifer black, postclypeus black, anteclypeus yellow with two basal brown triangular areas, labrum black with apical yellow band, posterior half of rear of head black, anterior half, labrum, and maxilla yellow. Thorax: Prothorax dorsal half metallic green, ventral half yellow. Mesothorax metallic green; metepimeron divided obliquely into a metallic green dorsal half continuous with mesothoracic color, and a yellow ventral half, same as metathorax.

Abdomen: S1–2 dorsally metallic green, sides brown, basally yellow, S3–6 dorsally brown with metallic reflections, S7–10 dorsally metallic green, sides brown.

Male: Head: Lost in holotype and paratype. Thorax. Same as female. Abdomen: S1–2 dorsally metallic green, sides brown, S3–10 damaged and discolored, mainly brown.

Diagnosis. Male cercus and epiproct resemble those of E. williamsoni and E. angeloi (see under E. angeloi ). E. haroldoi lacks the small black spine close to cercus apex on inner margin of those species, and the dorsal branch is not as flattened. The unique shape of the genital ligula in E. haroldoi ( Fig. 47 View FIGURES 28 – 47 ), with segment 3 apically widened, with lateral corners triangular and directed latero-posteriorly and postero-lateral projections lateral, distinguish it from all other species.

Female hind lobe of pronotum ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 53 – 66 ) is unique forming a wide short plate without any postero-dorsally directed lobe.

Distribution. Northern Brazil in the Amazonas region, Amazonas State (type locality Manaus, small stream Igarapé do Mariano). Northern Venezuela, San Carlos-Solanos road, Cojedes State.

Notes. The type material is extremely fragile and is damaged and broken, some parts missing, so I did not extrude the genital ligula in order to avoid further damage.
