Description of female (immature, 12.0 mm from Malibu Lagoon, CMNC 2004-1027)

Antenna 1 ( Figure 17A View Figure 17 ): peduncular articles 1:2: 3 in length ratio of 1.0:0.6:0.3; article 1 posterior margin with seta; article 2 posterior margin with pair of setae and a single seta; article 3 marginally bare; accessory flagellum five-articulate; primary flagellum 22- articulate, each article with one aesthetasc. Antenna 2 ( Figure 17B View Figure 17 ): peduncular articles 4: 5 in length ratio of 1.0:0.9, posterior margins of articles 4 and 5 with cluster and pair of setae; flagellum 14+ articulate.

Gnathopod 1 ( Figure 17C View Figure 17 ): palmar margin of propodus ( Figure 17D View Figure 17 ) with five robust inner and outer setae. Gnathopod 2 ( Figure 17E View Figure 17 ): palmar margin of propodus ( Figure 17F View Figure 17 ) with three pectinate and four robust simple setae on inner margin, two pectinate and two robust simple setae on outer margin.

Pereopod 6 ( Figure 17H View Figure 17 ): longest posteromarginal seta 0.3× width of basis. Pereopod 7 ( Figure 17I View Figure 17 ): longest posteromarginal seta of basis 0.6× width of ischium.

Uropod 3 ( Figure 17K View Figure 17 ): inner ramus length 0.3× outer ramus length; outer margin of outer ramus with two clusters and one pair of robust setae, and simple and plumose setae; inner margin with two pairs of robust setae and a single robust seta, and a few simple and numerous plumose setae; terminal article of outer ramus length 0.2× proximal article length.

Variation

The number of clusters of setae on peduncular articles of both antennae 1 and 2 varies from 0 to three. The number of clusters of robust setae on the outer margin of the ramus of uropod 3 varies from three to four.

Remarks

Eogammarus confervicolus and E. oclairi are distinct from their congeners by the presence of robust setae on the peduncular article 1 of antenna 2, and the absence of outer marginal setae on palp article 1 of maxilla 1. Eogammarus confervicolus is distinguished from E. oclairi by the following characters ( E. oclairi in parentheses): (1) the aesthetasc on the antenna 1 flagellum is about equal to the surrounding setae in length (longer); (2) calceoli are absent on female antenna 2 (present); (3) the longest posteromarginal seta on the basis of male pereopod 6 is about equal to half the ischium width (shorter); and (4) the robust apical setae on the telson are about equal to or shorter than the slender apical setae (longer) (see Table I).
