Dasymutilla chiron ursula (Cresson)

Mutilla Ursula Cresson, 1875 . Trans. Amer. Ent. Soc. 5:120. Holotype male, Texas (No. 1875) [ANSP] (examined). Female description: Mickel (1928:143).

Diagnosis of Female. This subspecies has the antennal scrobe of the female weakly carinate. It is otherwise like the female of D. chiron .

Diagnosis of Male. The male of this subspecies is identical to D. chiron , except that the head and mesosoma both are clothed with orange setae.

Distribution. USA (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Washington); Canada (British Columbia); Mexico (Chihuahua, Durango).

Remarks. This subspecies, like the nominate species, is extremely common, and exhibits some variation in key characters that cause some problems in identification. As in the male of D. chiron , the pit on sternum II may or not be present in D. chiron ursula . Hundreds of specimens of both females and males have been examined.
