[ Chordodes butensis Sciacchitano, 1937 ]

( Figure 1E)

1937. Chordodes butensis Sciacchitano. Rev. Zool Bot. Afr. 30: 145.

Holotype: 1male (AMT 1429)

Type locality: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Buta

Material examined: Holotype SEM midbody

Comments: In the original description, Sciacchitano (1937) described the cuticle of C. butensis with four areolar types; none of these areolar types are corresponding with crowned areoles which are the characteristic areoles of the genus Chordodes . In 1958, Sciacchitano widens the description of the cuticle giving 4 areolar types among which he describes areoles with short filaments (crowned areoles). A reinvestigation by SEM of the holotype ( Fig. 1E) revealed only three areolar types are present, which resemble the ones in C. africanus . We therefore regard C. butensis as a synonym of C. africanus .
