Semanotus russicus (Fabricius, 1777) View in CoL

Original combination: Callidium russicum Fabricius, 1776 .

Material examined

W Turkey: İzmir province: Bozdağ , two specimens .

Records from Turkey

Turkey ( Danilevsky and Miroshnikov 1985; Sama and Rapuzzi 2000; Sama 2002); Antalya province: Elmalı ( Adlbauer 1992).

Range

Europe ( Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Crimea), Caucasus, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Turkmenistan.

Chorotype

Central Asiatic-European. Sama (2002) stated that records from N Africa belong to S. algiricus Pic, 1905 .

Remarks

This species develops in conifers (especially Juniperus , also occasionally on Cedrus and Cupressus ). Larvae feed subcortically in branches and stems ( Svacha and Danilevsky 1989; Bense 1995; Sama 2002). It has only a few described varieties. The present material is the second record for Turkey based on an exact locality, and the species is probably distributed rather widely in Turkey. It has two subspecies: the nominotypical subspecies and S. russicus persicus Solsky, 1876 . The latter is distributed only in Iran and Turkmenistan (Kopet Dag), so it is an eastern subspecies. So the species is currently represented only by the nominotypical subspecies in Turkey. According to Sama (2002), S. algiricus Pic, 1905 is a distinct species that occurs only in North Africa ( Morocco, Algeria).
