Holotype: Holotype: 1 dextral ovigerous female (5.0 mm), with 1 mature allotype male (1.0 mm), from right branchial chamber of female Microprosthema validum (6.0 mm CL), coll. Q. B. Kazmi, Pacha near Karachi, Pakistan, 24°50'54"N, 66°43'E, 20 Jan. 1996 ( MRC Isop.12) GoogleMaps .

Description

Parasite ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ) in place forming prominent branchial swelling almost as large as host’s carapace.

Female ( Figs. 1A–G View FIGURE 1 , 2B View FIGURE 2 ) slightly dextral, pereon evenly curved, body length 5.0 mm, length slightly greater than maximum width. Body colour pinkish. All body regions and pereomeres distinctly separated.

Head nearly 2 times broader than long, strongly produced with broad anterior lamina ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ) equal to approximately onefifth length of head, surface of lamina with minute scales. Eyes absent. Barbula with smoothedged single hooklike lobe laterally on each side ( Fig. 1C View FIGURE 1 ). Antennule of three articles, antenna of five articles, both distally setose ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ), surfaces with numerous minute scales, giving serrated appearance to edges. Maxilliped ( Fig. 1D View FIGURE 1 ) produced into anterior spur; short, curved, sharply pointed palp articulating with anteromedial corner. Pereon of seven pereomeres, broadest across pereomere III, gradually tapering anteriorly and posteriorly; pereomere I with concave posterior margin, II with sinuous posterior margin, III–VII with strongly concave posterior margins; approximately threefourths of pereomere I median obscured by head. First oostegite with anterior lobe ovate, posterior lobe as a rounded crescent, smooth internal ridge ( Fig. 1F View FIGURE 1 ). Coxal plates I–IV as large irregular lobes, clearly separated from pereomeres, with smooth lateral margins; coxal plates V, VI present only on right side of body. Dorsolateral bosses clearly demarcated on pereomeres I–IV with right side larger than left. Tergal areas of pereomeres I–IV not extended laterally, those on pereomeres V and VI extended into lanceolate lobes, larger on left side of body. Oostegites incompletely enclosing marsupium. Pereopods subequal ( Fig. 1E View FIGURE 1 ), bearing short dactyli. Bases of pereopods enlarged and subquadrate ( Fig. 1E View FIGURE 1 ). First pair of pereopodal bases adjacent to head region, pereopod I reaching anteriorly; all pereopods evenly spaced.

Pleon of six pleomeres. Posterior margins of all pleomeres strongly concave ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ). Pleomeres I–IV with biramous pleopods and no lateral plates ( Fig. 1A, G View FIGURE 1 ); all pleopods with large lamellar exopodites and smaller, rounder endopodites, pleopods of nearly same size of each side, but those on left side smaller than on right, all having smooth surfaces; uropods biramous, exopodites of nearly same shape and size as exopodite of pleopod V, endopodites minute, their surfaces smooth.

Male ( Figs. 1H–K View FIGURE 1 , 2C View FIGURE 2 ) length 1.0 mm.

Head oblong, widest medially, narrower than and fused with first pereomere ( Fig. 1H View FIGURE 1 ). Eyes present, small ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ) (not visible on preserved specimen). Antennule of three articles, antenna of four articles, both distally setose, extending beyond margin of head ( Fig. 1I View FIGURE 1 ).

Pereomere IV broadest, body tapering slightly anteriorly and posteriorly. Slightly raised middorsal line along all of pereon ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ). Pereomeres directed laterally, posterolateral margins of all pereomeres tapering into rounded tips. Pigmentation in living specimen in few small patches on pereomeres and on anterolateral corners of pleomeres ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ). Pairs of pereopods ( Fig. 1J, K View FIGURE 1 ) unequal, first one larger, with carpi and meri fused, all other articles distinctly separated; other pairs smaller, theirs with carpi and meri incompletely fused.

Pleon of a single fused triangular segment, margins rounded ( Figs. 1H View FIGURE 1 , 2C View FIGURE 2 ). Pleopods, midventral tubercles, and uropods lacking.
