Harpyrhynchus monstrosus, Moss 1979: 381 (misidentification)

Description. FEMALE (holotype, Figs. 17 View FIGURE 17 A–B and 19A–C). Body, including gnathosoma, 550 long (530–556 in 4 paratypes) and 525 wide (525–530). Gnathosoma about 120 long and 135 wide. Palp about 65 long and 40 wide. Palpalae pectinate, palpalae dF and dG subequal, 18–20 long; palpalae l”G 14–15 long, about 1.3 times shorter than other palpalae. Setae vF about 22 long. Dorsal shield about 160 long and 480 wide. Dorsal striated idiosomal cuticle distinctly granulated. Setae vi and ve about 40 long, si about 30 long; setae se and c2 about 20 long. Vulvar fold situated 2 times closer to anterior margin of idiosoma than to posterior margin. Leg I and II setation (solenidia in parentheses): tarsi 8(1)–7(1), tibiae 5–5, genua-femora- trochanters 0–0. Articulated segment of legs III reduced and represented by 3 setae 21–29 long. Additional setae 10 pairs. Legs IV with 28–32 setae, about 100 long.

MALE. Unknown.

Type material examined. Holotype female ( OSAL 0083789) and 4 female paratypes ( OSAL 0 0 83790, 0 0 83800, 0 0 83805, 0083808) from Lichmera indistincta (Vigors and Horsfield) ( Passeriformes : Meliphagidae ) [in skin], AUSTRALIA: Western Australia, Beagle Bay, 16.89°S 122.52°E (GEONet), 21 August 1976, coll. (probably) F.S. Lukoschus.

Additional material examined. 2 females ( OSAL 0 0 83661, 0083665) from Phylidonyris novaehollandiae (Latham) ( Passeriformes : Meliphagidae ) [in skin], AUSTRALIA: New South Wales, Cordeaux Dam, 34.37°S 150.75°E (GEONet), 29 March 1969, coll. H. Battam.

Holotype deposition. OSAL.

Etymology. This name of this species derives from the Latin world apoda (legless) referring the absence of articulated segment of legs III.

Differential diagnosis. This new species is close to Anharpyrhynchus lukoschusi sp. nov. In females of both these species, palpalae dF and dG are subequal and 1.3 times longer than l”G, and there are ten pairs of additional setae. These species differ from each other by the following features. In females of A. apodus sp. nov., setae vi and ve are about 40 long, si about 30 long, setae se and c2 about 20 long, articulated segment of legs III is absent, and the setae of legs III are 21–29 long. In females of A. lukoschusi sp. nov., setae vi, ve, si, se, and c2 are about 20 long, the articulated segment of legs III is present, and the setae of legs III are 40–45 long.
