Description

Male ( Figures 1–4 View Figure 1 View Figure 2 View Figure 3 View Figure 4 ). Forewing length 8.0–9.0 mm, hindwing length 6.5–7.5 mm, body length 6.0– 7.5 mm (N = 10). Head, antennae and pronotum dark brown; Legs light brown; Wings hyaline, veins pale yellow. Tergum 9 slightly sclerotised and anterior deeply emarginated, with its posterior covered with several small spines. Hypoproct broad basally and tapering towards blunt rounded tip. Tergum 10 slightly sclerotised, front edge strongly sclerotised with a concave, lateral segment covered with several big black spines and anterolateral with few small spines. Epiproct ‘large and recurved, truncate at the tip and beset with small spinules when viewed laterally, with a small pointed median hook and two recurved lateral processes’ ( Wu 1938). Paraproct divided into 3 lobes; inner lobe slightly sclerotised, bearing hairs; median lobe with hairs medially and sclerotised partly, apex and lateral margin sclerotised distinctly, bifurcate, upper broad lobe darkly sclerous and distally with row of four to six stout, black spines, medially a field of 19–20 socketed setae, lower lobe lightly sclerous, acuminate; outer lobe strongly sclerotised, curved and finger-like.

Female ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 ). Forewing length 9.0– 10.5 mm, hindwing length 8.0–9.0 mm, body length 8.0–9.0 mm. Subgenital plate ‘roundedly produced and backward, covering the anterior half of 8th sternite’; Genital ‘opening on the 8th sternite guarded by two large and chitinized vaginal valves with divergent tips’ described by Wu (1938).

Remarks

After examining the specimens from Zhejiang province, followed by dissecting the paraprocts and comparing with drawings in the previous literatures, it can be easily found that the examined specimens are the same species as A. chui . However, according to descriptions of A. guangdongensis in Yang et al. (2004) and drawings of A. chui in Chu (1928) and Wu (1938), the morphological characteristics of both males and females are quite similar. Although the type specimens of A. chui have been lost ( Wu 1962) and the individual differences such as the number of small spines or the degree of sclerotisation should be taken into account ( Figures 3–5 View Figure 3 View Figure 4 View Figure 5 ), the crucial diagnostic features are fairly obvious, especially the epiproct and paraprocts of males and subgenital plate of females. Herein, the specimens of A. chui we examined were all collected from Mt. Mogan, Mt. Longwang, west of Mt. Tianmu and Qiangjiangyuan Forest Park of Zhejiang province, all adjacent to the type locality of A. chui Hangzhou. Moreover , the type locality of A. guangdongensis is Ruyuan of Guangdong province, which is not far from Zhejiang, and A. guangdongensis was also recorded in Baishanzu of Zhejiang province. Therefore, from the perspective of geographical distribution, their distribution areas are relatively concentrated in Zhejiang ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ). Hence, we regard A. guangdongensis as a junior subjective synonym of A. chui .
