Genus Philoscirtus Karsch, 1896

Philoscirtus contains two species, P. cordipennis Karsch from the East Usambara Mountains and coastal Tanzania and the recently newly described P. viridulus Hemp ( Hemp et al. 2015) from the West Usambara Mountains. In Hemp et al. (2015) the genus was redescribed and data on habitat, the bioacoustics and chromosomes were given and the biogeography of the genus discussed. In the Nguru Mountains of Tanzania, another population of Philoscirtus was detected differing in morphological characters and size but still very similar to P. cordipennis . Thus is it described as subspecies P. cordipennis spinosus n. ssp.
