ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1850c: 193.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insulae S. Sebastiani [ San Sebastian Island ( Brazil)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MRSN: Box 1755): Plecia Hoff. similis ? Rndn., ♂, Insul. S. Sebasti. G. / Plecia similis Rond. 1850: 193 , Ins . S. Seb. [not original label]; 1 ♀, syntype (covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tipulidae - Gen. Sciara a Culex ): Plecia similis Rnd., Ins. S. Sebast. / M. Zool. N° 10889.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Hardy 1966a: 5).

REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 193) described both sexes of Plecia similis from an unspecified number of specimens received from E. Truqui. Costa (1866: 39) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “934”. Two syntypes were found in this study.
