Status at New Ireland. Originally described from Carteret Harbour, New Ireland by Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1840: 273), based on MNHN material; subsequently reported as Callyodon bleekeri by Beaufort in Weber & Beaufort (1940: 318, part), and as Callyodon blochii (non Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1840) and C. bleekeri (non Beaufort in Weber & Beaufort, 1940) by Munro (1958: 244, 245). A specimen photographed in Kavieng region on 5 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey; specimens observed at Kavieng fish market by Barry C. Russell during 7–21 June 2014; a specimen observed at Balang Island, New Hanover, 0–18 m depth, St. T21, on 6 Nov. 2006, by Gerald R. Allen.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3.—General distribution: India east to Palau and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Lord Howe Island. Found in sheltered coastal coral reefs, 2–18 m depth. Marine.
