Stenopseustes transversus View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs. 5–8 View FIGURE 1 – 8. 1 – 4 )

Description. Male. Integument orangish; mandibles black toward apex; apex of antennal tubercles brownish; base of scape and antennomeres IX–XI brownish; anterior margin of prothorax ringed with black (wider dorsally); center of pronotum with wide black band, slightly angled upwards from center, continuing on sides of prothorax; base of pronotum with narrow black band, continuing on sides of prothorax; base of metepisterna and narrow band on anterior margin of metasternum black; humeri brownish; base of elytra brown at sides of scutellum; elytral sutural band close to scutellum, black, gradually light brown toward apex; sides of elytra narrowly brown; elytra translucent, except for opaque tumid area close to apex; part of metacoxae dark brown; abdominal ventrite I narrowly margined with dark brown on base; abdominal ventrites II–III with basal brown band, distinctly lighter centrally, enlarged on center of sides; abdominal ventrite IV with lateral brown band.

Head. Not elongated behind eyes (distance between posterior edge of eyes slightly shorter than width of upper eye lobes); rostrum (between apex of inferior ocular lobe and genal apex), in frontal view, 0.65 times length of lower eye lobe. Frons finely, densely, confluently punctate laterally and between center of lower eye lobes, sparsely punctate centrally toward clypeus; with short, sparse yellowish setae, slightly denser laterally. Area between antennal tubercles smooth, glabrous, somewhat depressed. Area between upper eye lobes and prothoracic margin finely, confluently punctate; with short and long, erect setae near upper eye lobes, setae almost absent on remaining surface. Antennal tubercles elevated, subacute toward apex, finely, abundantly punctate on frontal base, almost smooth on remaining surface; with short, sparse setae on punctate region. Clypeus finely, densely punctate centrally (punctures distinctly finer than on frons), smooth toward labrum, sparsely punctate laterally (punctures as on frons); with short, sparse setae, laterally with one long, erect seta. Labrum very finely punctate on base, smooth toward apex; with long setae directed forward, mainly anteriorly and laterally. Outer side of mandibles finely striate-punctate on basal half, gradually smooth toward apex; with short, sparse setae on basal two thirds interspersed with some long, erect setae. Area behind eyes finely, abundantly punctate; area close to lower eye lobes yellowish pubescent (wider toward ventral side), with long, erect setae interspersed. Ventral side of head finely, abundantly punctate, except for subsmooth basal area, and transversely striate area of submentum; with short, erect, moderately abundant yellowish setae interspersed with some long, erect setae, except for almost glabrous basal area. Genae finely, abundantly punctate (punctures slightly finer than on frons), except for smooth distal region; with short, sparse, yellowish setae. Distance between upper eye lobes 0.80 times length of scape; distance between lower eye lobes in frontal view 0.55 times length of scape. Antennae 1.1 times elytral length, reaching about base of distal third of elytra and middle of second abdominal segment; scape with long, erect, sparse setae; ventral side of antennomeres III–VII with long, erect setae, gradually sparser toward antennomere VII; antennal formula (ratio) based on antennomere III: scape = 0.70; pedicel = 0.23; IV = 0.49; V = 0.76; VI = 0.67; VII = 0.63; VIII = 0.47; IX = 0.47; X = 0.39; XI = 0.39.

Thorax. Prothorax slightly longer than wide (1.1 times), laterally rounded. Pronotum finely, densely punctate (general appearance finely rugose); with longitudinal, slightly elevated carina from near base to near apex (indistinct depending on angle of vision); with yellowish pubescence interspersed with short, erect, sparse setae (pubescence more or less distinct depending on angle of light; more white or silver depending on angle of light). Sides of prothorax, pro- and mesosternum with sculpture and pubescence as on pronotum. Prosternal process very narrow, slightly widened at apex. Metepisterna and mesepimera microsculptured, with pubescence as on mesosternum. Metepisterna and metasternum microsculptured interspersed with fine, sparse punctures; with yellowish pubescence interspersed with long, erect, sparse setae (pubescence more or less distinct, white or silver depending on angle of light). Scutellum longitudinally sulcate, with short, decumbent, yellowish setae, more conspicuous laterally. Elytra. Finely, moderately abundantly punctate on basal quarter, distinctly sparser on remaining surface, except for dense punctures along outer margin; about distal seventh tumid; outer margins convergent from humeri to about distal third, then divergent toward rounded apex; sutural margin straight from base to slightly after middle, then divergent toward apex; base with triangular pubescent area, interspersed with long, sparse, erect setae, slightly surpassing basal quarter, from humeri to suture; remaining surface with short, erect, sparse setae. Legs. Femora claviform, with long, erect, sparse, yellowish setae. Metatibiae with dense tuft with light reddish-brown setal brush (more brownish or more yellowish depending on angle of light), starting about basal third, denser on distal half.

Abdomen. Ventrites I–IV microsculptured, except for finer, abundant punctures on darker area, and smooth band close to apex; with indistinct, yellowish pubescence, interspersed with long, erect, sparse setae, except for glabrous smooth area close to apex. Ventrite V finely punctate, with pubescence and setae as on remaining ventrites; apex widely emarginate, with sides elevated.

Dimensions in mm (holotype male). Total length, 11.35; prothorax: length, 2.05; anterior width, 1.60; posterior width, 1.50; largest prothoracic width, 1.85; humeral width, 1.90; elytral length, 6.40.

Type material. Holotype male from MEXICO, Vera Cruz : UNAM Field Station (Los Tuxtlas; 35 km SE Catemaco), 24-24.IV.1995, F. T. Hovore col. ( CASC).

Etymology. The specific epithet “ transversus ” refers to the transverse stripe on the pronotum and the markings on the abdomen.

Remarks. Stenopseustes transversus sp. nov. differs from S. sericinus Bates, 1880 as follows: prothorax proportionally shorter; carina on center of pronotum only slightly conspicuous; metatibiae with setal brush. In S. sericinus the prothorax is proportionally longer, the carina on center of pronotum is very distinct, and the metatibiae lack a setal brush. It also differs from S. aeger Bates, 1873 , and S. lingafelteri Clarke, 2013 by the presence of a setal brush on the metatibiae (absent in these species). The new species shares having metatibiae with a setal brush with Stenopseustes josemartii ( Zayas, 1956) , but differs because the latter is proportionally wider (holotype photograph available at Bezark 2016), and the prothorax has transverse dark bands (absent in S. josemartii ).
