7. Lanonia gracilis (Blume) Henderson & Bacon (2011: 891) View in CoL .

Licuala gracilis Blume View in CoL in Schultes & Schultes (1830: 1303). Lectotype (designated by Henderson & Bacon 2011):— Blume, 1838, tab. 92.

Licuala flabellum Martius (1838: 237) View in CoL . Type :— Celebes, no date, C. Reinwardt s. n. (holotype M!) .

Stems length and diameter not recorded, clustered. Leaves number not recorded; ligules length not recorded, soon disintegrating into fibers; sheaths and proximalmost part of petioles with scattered, brown scales; petioles 100.0 cm long, 0.4 cm wide at the apex; petiole thorns usually poorly developed, brown or black, more or less regularly arranged on proximalmost part of petiole; hastulas raised, triangular, infolded; leaf blades 75.0 cm wide; costas 7.0 cm long, narrow, with a pulvinus at the apex abaxially, with the few segments free except the middle pair joined at their bases; segments 9(9–10) per leaf, not mottled, with minute, reddish-brown scales abaxially, with (on dried specimens) straight margins; middle segments 28.4 cm long, 8.6 cm wide at the apex; apices of middle segments with adaxial splits not much deeper than abaxial ones. Inflorescences, prophylls, and peduncles length not recorded; rachis bracts flattened, splitting apically and laterally, usually densely brown tomentose; rachillae not filiform nor thick and ribbed, tomentum not recorded; staminate rachises length not recorded; staminate partial inflorescences 2, branched to 2 orders; staminate rachillae number, length, and diameter not recorded; staminate flowers length not recorded; sepals not pedicellate at the base, not densely hairy; petals, stamens, and pistillodes not recorded; pistillate rachises length not recorded; pistillate partial inflorescences 3, branched to 2 orders; pistillate rachillae number, length, and diameter not recorded; pistillate flowers length and styles not recorded; fruits length and diameter not recorded, globose, pink or red to black, with smooth surfaces; seeds not recorded.

Distribution and habitat:— Indonesia, Java, known only from Ujung Kulon National Park, in lowland rainforest at 150 m elevation ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ).

Taxonomic notes:— Specimens determined as preliminary species Lanonia gracilis share a unique combination of qualitative variable states and are therefore recognized as a phylogenetic species. The type specimen of L. flabellum shares the same combination and is included as a synonym. As noted by Henderson & Bacon (2011), the type of L. flabellum was probably collected in Java, and not Celebes as stated on the label.

The lectotype of Licuala gracilis is an illustration from Blume (1838).A sterile specimen at L with “ Licuala gracilis Bl. Java ” written on the label could possibly be the specimen that was illustrated by Blume , but this is unclear.

Lanonia gracilis occurs far from other species of Lanonia and its relationships with other species is unclear.
