Redescription

Head, prothorax, mesosternum, and fifth abdominal segment orangish; elytra yellowish; antennae, legs, and ventral body surface dark brown to black. Body with short, dense, yellow pubescence (except prothorax); punctation fine, dense, deeper and more evident on elytra. Antennae longer than body in males, reaching one-quarter distance to apex of elytra in females. Scape cylindrical, segments 3–4 similar-sized, as long as scape; shorter than segment 5; segments 6, 7 similar-sized; 8–10 gradually shorter; 11 slightly longer than 10. Prothorax elongated, sides with a moderately prominent tubercle posterior to middle. Pronotum with four gibbosities, two antemedian, proximate and two near base. Elytra about 4.0 times as long as prothorax; three longitudinal carinae. First segment of protarsi 1.5 times as long as the second; first segment of mesotarsi 2.0 times as long as the second; first segment of metatarsi 3.0 times as long as the second. Last abdominal segment dorsally exposed.

Geographical distribution. Brazil (Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina) ( Monné, 2005) .

Measurements in mm, male/female. Total length, 9.0–10.1/10.2–12.0; prothorax length, 1.2–1.9/1.3–1.6; prothorax width, 0.9–1.3/1.0–1.5; elytral length, 6.7–7.5/7.3– 8.8; humeral width, 1.3–1.5/1.5–1.7.

Type material. Male holotype from Brazil, Santa Catarina, Mafra ( USNM). We examined a colour photograph of the holotype .

Material examined. Brazil, Rio de Janeiro : Rio de Janeiro ( Corcovado ), one male, one female, November 1963, Alvarenga and Seabra col. ( MNRJ) ; one male, one female, October / November 1968, Fragoso col. ( MNRJ) ; São Paulo: São José do Barreiro ( Serra da Bocaina , 1600 m); one male, two females, November 1967, Alvarenga and Seabra col. ( MNRJ); (Serra da Bocaina, 1650 m) ; six males, 18 females, November 1969, Seabra and Oliveira col. ( MNRJ) .

Comments

The description of Cylindrommata longissima Tippmann, 1960 was based on two specimens, one male and one female. Examination of the female paratype ( Figure 1E View Figure 1 ), a colour photograph of the male holotype ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 ), and 46 additional specimens revealed that the holotype and the paratype of C. longissima are different species. The paratype is a male, and is the paratype of the new species described here, C. susanae sp. nov. Cylindrommata longissima differs from the other species by the characters described in the key.
