Cerithium truncatum

truncatum . Cerithium . Baily, 1858 [non Gray in Griffith & Pidgeon, 1833, non Griffith & Pidgeon, 1834].

see Theodisca cicur ( Zhizhchenko, 1934)

* Cerithium truncatum sp. nov. — Baily 1858: 150, pl. 10, figs 11a–b [non Gray in Griffith & Pidgeon, 1833, non Griffith & Pidgeon, 1834].

Type material. Lectotype (designated herein), NHM TG 27311, SL: 10.2 mm, MD: 3.8 mm, Natural History Museum (London, UK).

Type locality. Gully Mramornaya ( Russia). Baily (1858) named the locality as “Gorge of Iphigenia”, but this name has no trace in local toponymy and cannot be found in historical literature. This is a sole canyon-like ravine nearby the monastery St. Georg known by Chokrakian strata ( Andrussow 1887: as Gorge Karan'). Recently mythological hypothesis was published that the Temple of Artemis, in which Iphigenia served as a priestess, was close to the Mramornaya ravine ( Shigin 2008). This would explain the name “Gorge of Iphigenia”.

Stratigraphy. Middle Miocene, early Chokrakian.

Discussion. This species was based on two fragmentary specimens with cylindrical whorls, weak beads and central spiral cord. The name Cerithium truncatum was preoccupied by Gray in Griffith & Pidgeon (1833: plate captions pl. 13) and Griffith & Pidgeon (1834: 598). As we consider Cerithium truncatum Baily, 1858 to be a subjective junior synonym of Theodisca cicur ( Zhizhchenko, 1934) , no replacement name is needed.

Eastern Paratethys. Early Chokrakian (Middle Miocene): Crimea: Mramornaya gully ( Russia) ( Baily 1858).
