Pseudodendrothrips lateralis Wang View in CoL

( Figs 6, 7 View FIGURES 1–10 , 23–30 View FIGURES 23–30 )

Pseudodendrothrips lateralis Wang, 1993: 253 View in CoL .

Female macroptera. Body bicoloured ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1–10 ); head and pterothorax brown but mesonotum pale with anterior half shaded, metanotum pale, pronotum pale, abdomen shaded but tergites III–IV pale, tergites V–VII pale laterally with brown markings, sternites II–VI often pale at middle, sternite VII pale at anterior and posterior margins of middle; antennal segments I–IX brown but IV–VI pale at bases; fore wing pale with a brown longitudinal line medially, clavus pale; fore femur pale but shaded at base, mid and hind femora brown, all tibiae pale but shaded at middle; all tarsi pale; major setae pale or slightly shaded.

Head sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae behind ocellar triangle and with small wrinkles or dots throughout, weakly sculptured within ocellar triangle; ocellar setae III small but slightly stout and situated between anterior-inner margin of hind ocelli ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 23–30 ); compound eye with stout setae, with 6 pigmented facets ventrally, mouth-cone not slender and pointed at apex ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 23–30 ), maxillary palp segments I–II ratio length/width of as follows: 2.4, 3.3. Antennae 9-segmented, segment II with small dots between striae, III and IV with sensoria reaching to basal third and to middle of next segments, respectively, segment VI with inner sensorium arising from base and slightly exceeding apex of VII, VIII with outer sensorium arising from base and much exceeding apex of IX ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 23–30 ). Antennal segments I–IX ratio of length/width as follows: 1.0, 1.2, 1.7, 1.7, 2.0, 2.4, 1.7, 3.0, 6.0.

Pronotum with transverse lines having fringe, numerous small dots or wrinkles between lines, about 7 discal setae; posteromarginal S4 setae stout, narrower at base and apex, about three times as long as remaining setae, S1– S3 setae subequal in length to or slightly shorter than discal setae. Mesonotal transverse line with fringe. Metascutum longitudinal lines with fringe at middle and reticulate laterally, with weak wrinkles between lines and within reticulations ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 23–30 ). Fore wing first vein with 7, setae stout except a pale basal seta; costal vein with 20– 21 stout setae; posteromarginal fringe straight.

Abdominal tergite I sculptured with transverse anastomosing lines having fringe between S1 setae, smooth between median transverse lines but with small wrinkles just lateral to S1 setae ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 23–30 ), laterally with several small microtrichia on posterior margin; II–VIII with minute microtrichia at posterior ends of small longitudinal ridges ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 23–30 ), numerous small dots between longitudinal ridges, transverse sculpture lines with fringe on III–IV; II–VII with microtrichia on posterior margins behind S1 and S2 setae; tergite IX with three pairs of setae near posterior margin, S1 setae anteriorly and three setae arranged in oblique straight line at each side, S3 setae slightly stout at middle but not distinctly stouter than remaining setae ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 23–30 ); tergite X with numerous microtrichia on posterior half and S1 setae not stouter than S1 setae on tergite IX; sternites without small longitudinal ridges; sternite VII eroded at anterior and posterior margins medially ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 23–30 ); sternite IX with posteromarginal S2 setae similar to S3 setae of tergite IX.

Male macroptera ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1–10 ). General structure very similar to female, abdominal segments III–V and tergites VIII–X pale; tergite I with irregular sculpture and small wrinkles between S1 setae.

Specimens examined. JAPAN, Ryukyus: Iriomote-jima Is, Aira-gawa river, 1 male on yellow pan trap, 10.x.2004, T. Ishizaki (TUA). Ishigaki-jima Is, nr. Nagura, Takeda, 1 male on leaf of Ficus erecta [ Moraceae ], 11.i.1991, S. Okajima (TUA). Irabu-jima Is.: 1 female on Flagellaria indica [ Flagellariaceae ], 19.ix.2016, K. Minoura (TUA); 1 male on Ardisia sieboldii [ Myrsinaceae ], 19.ix.2016, K. Minoura (TUA). TAIWAN: Chiaihsien, Kuantzulin: 69 females & 18 males (host unknown), 1.iv.1993, T. Nonaka & S. Okajima (TUA). Taichiung City: a paratype female, on Morus sp., 1.iii.1991, C.L.Wang. Kendin: a paratype male on dead wooden tree, 13.iv.1993, C.L.Wang (TARI); a female on Codoaeum variegatum [ Euphorbiaceae ], 13.iv.1993, C.L.Wang (TARI); a female & a male on Acacia confusus [ Fabaceae ], 13.iv.1993, C.L.Wang (TARI).

Comments. In the original description, the pronotum of this species was stated to lack small lines between the transverse sculpture. However, weak small wrinkles are visible on a part of the pronotum of the paratypes studied here, even though these specimens were not macerated by KOH.
