According to Leis (2006) the name Chilomycterus atringa (Linnaeus, 1758) cannot be assigned with certainty to any species. Tortonese in Whitehead et al. (1986: 1346) recorded it from Madeira. * Chilomycterus reticulatus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Spotfin burrfish

Numerous specimens in the MMF and four specimens in the BMNH belong to this species.

Diodon hystrix Linnaeus, 1758 —Spot-fin porcupinefish

Tortonese in Whitehead et al. (1986:1347) recorded this species from Madeira. However, the Diodon species at the Canary Islands (Brito et al.

2005) and at the Azores ( Azevedo et al. 2004) is Diodon eydouxii Brisout de Barneville, 1846. The presence of D. hystrix at Madeira therefore appears doubtful and the identity of Madeiran Diodon needs checking.
