The European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena (Linnaeus, 1758) was recorded from Madeira by Ben- Tuvia in Whitehead et al. (1986: 1195) and Sylva in Quéro et al. (1990: 863-864), also for instance by Edwards (1993). According to Wirtz (1998), these records are likely to be confusions with the common Sphyraena viridensis .
