Type species. Lobothorax typus Bleeker, 1857 ; by monotypy.

Diagnosis. A detailed diagnosis was given by Yu & Bruce (2006).

Remarks. Lobothorax can be recognized by the weakly vaulted body; anterior margin of cephalon with distinct rostrum; anterolateral margins of pereonite 1 extending beyond rostrum, with prominent lobes. Coxae all shorter than pereonites. Pleonite 1 markedly narrower than pleonite 2. Pleopods all lamellar, pleopods 1 and 2 exopods each with proximolateral lamella; without pockets or folds; pleopods 3–5 with weakly developed pockets or ridges.

Other similar Buccal-attaching genera differ from Lobothorax in the following characteristics: Ceratothoa Dana, 1852 has pereonite 1 anterolateral margins projecting forward; anterior margin of pereonite 1 indented ( Bruce & Bowman 1989); Cinusa Schiöedte & Meinert, 1884 : pereonites 3 and 4 widest anteriorly; antenna slender ( Hadfield et al. 2010); brood pouch arising from coxae 2–5 ( Hadfield 2012); Glossobius Schiöedte & Meinert, 1883 : pereonite 1 anterolateral margins projecting laterally, with slight recess, anterior margin straight or convex ( Martin et al. 2015b).
