Gynacantha are large, predominantly brown amd/or green dragonflies ( Fig. 63 View FIGURE 63 ) that are typically crepuscular. It is the most species-diverse genus of Aeshnidae in Ecuador, with 12 species recorded. The main reference for iden- tification is Williamson (1923a). Only a few species are commonly encountered. The nymphs develop rapidly in temporary forest pools, although at least one species occupies phytotelmata.
