status

Heteragrion Selys, 1862 View in CoL

Medium to large damselflies; the species in Ecuador are usually brown and black with yellow to yellowish orange markings ( Fig. 43 View FIGURE 43 ). Adults perch at an angle on stems and twigs mostly in shade or small sunny spots. Eight species have been recorded in Ecuador, but there is potential for undescribed species to be discovered as the genus is in need of revision. For identification see Williamson (1919), Lencioni (2005) and Vilela et al. (2019). Heckman (2008) is useful for narrowing down some of the choices but we advise caution in using this reference for this genus.
