Argia Rambur, 1842 View in CoL
Argia is the largest genus of damselflies in the New World, with over 138 valid species names and at least seven species yet to described ( Garrison & von Ellenrieder 2018). Adults range from small to large and are variable in color pattern, the thoracic dorsum being black with blue or purple stripes (rarely orange) to entirely metallic red or copper, the thoracic sides usually blue, and the abdomen from mostly blue with black markings to mostly black with small blue markings ( Figs. 16a & 16b View FIGURE 16 ), rarely largely orange. Species identification relies on Calvert (1902), and Garrison & von Ellenrieder (2015, 2017, 2018). Thirty-two species have been recorded in Ecuador, of which three are considered endemic. Habitat of most species in Ecuador is small streams to mid-sized rivers, with a few found in pooled areas of slow streams, seepage streams or sheet flow over boulders.

Note: In east slope form the light coloration on the thorax is blue, and in some west slope forms it is lighter blue or pale yellowish, especially from northwest Ecuador. According to Garrison & von Ellenrieder (2018), L. K. Gloyd considered A. adamsi from Ecuador west of the Andes to represent a new species to which she had applied the manuscript name A. lorena . However, Garrison & von Ellenrieder (2018) found no significant differences in male caudal appendages nor female mesostigmal plates.

Notes: According to Rosser Garrison (pers. comm. 25-vi-2018), “The identification within the Argia gerhardi / kokama / nigrior complex is difficult. I have seen (and illustrated) types of all three and have thus far done a lot of work on this group....Putting names on various populations is not always easy as I have had to compare various characters from Ecuadorean and Peruvian populations with the types ( Bolivia, Peru) and the characters I have thus far seen to be of diagnostic value do not seem to be concordant. In particular, males of Argia kokama approach those of A. nigrior closely and the females of A. gerhardi and A. nigrior are difficult to separate. All of this is going to require more work.....the records I have for Argia gerhardi from Ecuador are listed with the proviso that not all of the records may pertain to that species.”
All records are from relatively high elevation, from 880–1870 m.

Notes: From Rosser Garrison (pers. comm., 2018): “This species was treated and illustrated in Garrison & von Ellenrieder (2015). von Ellenrieder & Garrison (2007) followed by Heckman (2008) illustrated the appendages of a male in the RBINS with the manuscript name “ lateralis ” by Selys as A. huanacina . This is incorrect. Subsequent examination of these specimens showed the manuscript name lateralis Selys to represent A. infrequentula as can be seen by comparing Figs. 6 View FIGURE 6 l-n in von Ellenrieder & Garrison (2007) and Fig. 3.1. 427 in Heckman (2008) to Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 l-2 and 10 p- 2 in Garrison & von Ellenrieder (2015).”
This southern Ecuador record seems to be the northernmost record for this species.

Note: Often referred to as “near” A. risi , then in the mid 1990’s it was referred to as “ A. dunklei ,” a manuscript name since it was thought to be a new species. Many specimens in various museums around the world are labeled “ A. dunklei ms.” Another manuscript name that was proposed more recently was “ A. upano ;” Rosser Garrison (pers. comm., 2017) has determined that most of these refer to A. limitata , a very common, mid-elevation east slope species. A few specimens labeled “ A. upano ms.” turned out to be A. philipi Garrison & von Ellenrieder, 2018 .

Note: This species is closely related to A. talamanca and may be found to be a junior synonym of it; the issue is currently under review by Rosser Garrison.
Argia unresolved: There are numerous specimens and records for Argia which we have not listed here. Many belong to the Argia gerhardi-kokama-nigrior group that still needs to be resolved. Museum specimens are often labeled by alphabetical designation (e.g. “ Argia sp. g”). Garrison & von Ellenrieder have been working on this complex for some time and hopefully someday will provide a solution for these unresolved Argia .
