Type species. Cuma rathkii Krøyer, 1841 by subsequent designation ( Gerken 1999).
Diagnosis. Female and subadult male. Carapace with pseudorostrum not greatly elongate. Pereopods 3–4 with or without rudimentary exopods in female. Telson at least twice length of pleonite 6, with post-anal portion, with at least 3 pairs of lateral setae. Adult male. Antennule not greatly expanded, may have brush of setae on peduncle article 3. Antennae extending to end of pleon. Pereopod and exopod bases may be weakly expanded. With 2 pairs of pleopods.
Remarks. The genus Diastylis is surprisingly depauperate in Australian waters, with only one species currently known ( Gerken, 2014). In contrast, the diversity of the New Zealand Diastylis fauna is more similar to other temperate areas, with 11 species now known, including those described herein. New Zealand species. Diastylis acanthoelachys n. sp., D. adaiocanthus n. sp., D. acuminata Jones, 1960 , D. curtain n. sp., D. dasys n. sp., D. enodis n. sp., D. homoacanthus n. sp., D. implanus n. sp., D. insularum Calman, 1908 , D. neozealanica Thomson, 1892 , D. spinacellulosus n. sp.
