Bangana Hamilton, 1822 View in CoL View at ENA

Type species: Cyprinus dero Hamilton, 1822 ; gender feminine.

Species of Bangana s.s. are distinguished from other Bangana s.l. by: postlabial groove interrupted medially ( Fig. 2); presence of an ethmoidal furrow (a furrow connecting outer extremities of postlabial groove, over the snout, in front of the ethmoid; Zhang & Chen, 2006: 44); mouth semicircular, inferior, snout blunt and slightly projecting; interior surface of lateral portion of upper lip smooth; dorsal fin falcate; 40–43 lateral line scales; 5–9½ scale rows between lateral line and origin of dorsal fin; presence of a supracleithral blotch (diamond-shaped blotch above pectoral fin, at level of lateral line).

The genus is known only from South Asia , from the Salween drainage westwards to the endorheic drainages of southeastern Iran. Species included in Bangana inYang et al.'s analysis are: B. dero , B. bata (Hamilton, 1822) and B. boggut (Sykes, 1839) , assuming the samples of the last two species are correctly identified. ' Bangana' bata and 'B.' boggut have a distinctive appearance and are usually placed in Labeo (e.g. Jayaram & Dhas, 2000, Kottelat, 2013). A review of the literature suggests that the following species also belong in Bangana : B. almorae (Chaudhuri, 1912) , B. devdevi (Hora, 1936) , B. diplostomus (Heckel, 1838) and B. gedrosicus (Zugmayer, 1912) . According to Yang et al.'s results, Nukta (with N. nukta and a sample of unclear identity) constitutes a sister lineage to Bangana ; it could be considered either as a distinct genus or as a subgenus or a synonym of Bangana . [Contrary to the statement of Yang et al. (2012: 370) and most nomenclators and synonymies, Nukta Hora, 1942 (type species: Cyprinus nukta Sykes, 1839 ) is known not to be related to Schismatorhynchos Bleeker, 1855 since at least Reid (1985: 287; included in Tylognathus = Bangana ), Kottelat (1989: 39; in Labeo s.l.), Siebert & Tjakrawidjaja (1998: 100); superficially, Schismatorhynchos seems to have similarities with Lobocheilos Bleeker, 1854 .]

Tylognathus Heckel, 1843 (type species: Varicorhinus diplostomus Heckel, 1838 ) is a junior synonym of Bangana . Rohitodes Bleeker, 1860 (type species: Labeo cephalus Valenciennes, in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1842 ) is possibly a synonym, but this must be confirmed after clarifying the identity of the type species, whose type series is reportedly lost (potentially a senior synonym of B. devdevi ).
