Tenodera Burmeister, 1838 View in CoL

= Paratenodera Rehn 1903 View in CoL

Exhibits a Paleotropical distribution, with 13 species in Africa, Eurasia and Australasia, of which three are currently known from Borneo. Tenodera View in CoL species are generalist ambushers, exhibiting green/brown polyphenism. Found on higher weeds in open habitats. Two species introduced in North America.

Tenodera fasciata ( Olivier, 1792) View in CoL §

Mantis fasciata Olivier, 1792

= Mantis leptelytra Lichtenstein, 1802

= Mantis attenuata Stoll, 1813

= Mantis exsiccata Audinet-Serville, 1839

= Tenodera intermedia Saussure, 1870 View in CoL

Distribution. Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, Philippines, Talaud Islands, Flores, Sumba, Maluku Islands ( Giglio-Tos 1912, 1927, Werner 1923, 1933, Ehrmann 2002).

Bornean record. Kalimantan: Wain ( Beier 1958).

Remarks. This species is often confused with the African T. superstitiosa ( Fabricius, 1781) (see, e. g. Saussure 1871, Westwood 1889, Krauss 1901, Rehn 1903, 1909, Werner 1908).

Tenodera aridifolia ( Stoll, 1813) View in CoL

Mantis aridifolia Stoll, 1813

= Mantis chlorodeuta Burmeister, 1838

Distribution. India, Taiwan, S China, Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Labuan, Sulawesi, Philippines, Lombok, Flores, Sumba ( Giglio-Tos 1912, 1927, Ehrmann 2002).

Bornean records. Sarawak: Bandar Sri Aman (CS in situ), Mt. Dulit ( Beier 1937); Sabah: Mt. Benom (SMNK), Labuan Island ( Hebard 1920).

Remarks. Widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. Other synonyms listed by Ehrmann (2002), such as Mantis japonica Saussure, 1869 , Mantis mandarinea Saussure, 1871 , and Tenodera aridifolia brevicollis Beier, 1933 , are not attributable to T. aridifolia as as currently conceived. There is much confusion in the literature between this species and Tenodera sinensis Saussure, 1871 . The latter species is distributed in temperate regions of E Asia. Considerable intraspecific variability, in addition to the erroneous inclusion of T. sinensis as a subspecies of T. aridifolia added to the confusion. The genitalia of both species are depicted in Jensen et al. 2009. A thorough revision of the T. aridifolia complex is needed.

Tenodera blanchardi Giglio-Tos, 1912

= Mantis costalis Blanchard, 1853 ( partim)

= Mantis fusca Blanchard, 1853 ( partim)

Distribution. India (?), Borneo, Sulawesi, Maluku Islands, Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, N Australia ( Giglio-Tos 1912, Beier 1958, 1965, Ehrmann 2002, Jensen et al. 2009).

Bornean records. Kalimantan: Long Navang ( Werner 1930).

Remarks. Regarded as a subspecies of T. fasciata by Beier (1958, 1965); confused with the African (!) T. bokiana ( Giglio-Tos, 1907) (synonym of T. superstitiosa ) in Jensen et al. (2009).
