Material examined. Indochina: Hinterindien, leg. Thorey— 1 male (type) (Wien NHMW).
Additional Description. Medium large species. Head: Face ovoid; forehead in middle with fine riffles, laterally nearly smooth; fastigium verticis hardly wider than scapus; ocelli little distinct; fastigium frontis separated from fastigium verticis by a fine suture; subocular furrows distinct.
Wings surpassing hind knees ( Fig. 47C View FIGURE 47 ). Tegmen: Radius with two branches, both forked near tip; media anterior arises free from base although almost leaning on radius but with visible cross-veins between both veins; cubitus anterior at base with a single branch that forks into two veins, the anterior branch makes a curvature and receives an oblique connection vein from MA but remains single-branched as MP+CuA1, the posterior branch (CuA2) also does not divide further; cubitus posterior undivided, free throughout; with 3 anal veins.
Legs: fore and mid femora unarmed; hind femur with 9 external and 9 internal spines on ventral margins; hind tibia with spaced spines on both dorsal margins, ventral margins with one pre-apical spine; with 3 apical spurs on both sides.
Coloration. General color brown; vertex and disc of pronotum black. Face uniformly yellowish brown, only tip of mandibles black; dorsal area of fastigium and vertex black; flagellum of antennae darkened. Tegmen semitransparent; area from behind subcosta to hind margin in more than basal third of tegmen black, interrupted by a light stroke between CuA and CuP; dark area prolonged (including the veins) between R and MA and between CuP and An1; hind wing semi-transparent; main veins dark brown to black, veinlets light to medium brown.
Male. Eighth abdominal tergite moderately prolonged, globular. Ninth abdominal tergite globular, furrowed in midline, at tip provided at both sides of furrow with a large, compressed, curved, acute process, in situ overlapping each other ( Fig. 50D View FIGURE 50 ). Subgenital plate wide, little constricted in about mid-length; apical margin faintly bilobate; styli inserted laterally.
Discussion. The species was originally described by Brunner (1888) under the name Gryllacris atrata after a single male from Indochina. This specimen must be regarded as the holotype and is deposited in NHMW. The name Gryllacris atrata however proofed to be a primary homonym of Gryllacris atrata Walker, 1869 , now Melanogryllacris atrata ( Walker, 1869) . Therefore Kirby (1906) replaced Brunner's name by Gryllacris basalis Kirby, 1906 . However Kirby's recognized replacement name also was a primary homonym, of Gryllacris basalis Walker, 1869 , now Eremus basalis ( Walker, 1869) , as recognized by Griffini (1909c). He found two specimens (1 male and 1 female) in Genève (MHNG) that he regarded to be conspecific with Brunner's type (see also Hollier 2010). He established the replacement name Gryllacris basaliatrata . The type of this name is the male described by Brunner (1888) in NHMW. Karny (1937) listed this species under Diaphanogryllacris . However, the color pattern of the tegmen, which resembles that of C. borneoensis , and the specific structure of the male abdominal appendages are evidence that it should be combined with Capnogryllacris .
