Diagnosis for the Sabah species.

Teleoconch: Radial sculpture prosocline, consisting of fine growth lines or densely placed to moderately spaced, fine riblets. Last whorl without prominent spiral threads (numerous very fine spiral threads may be present), or with 1 spiral thread or keel at the periphery.

Remarks.

The inclusion of the species listed below in Kaliella is merely a convenience, as is the inclusion of our concept of Kaliella in the Euconulidae . Both are inspired by an overall similarity of the shells. It is certain that our arrangement does not reflect phylogenetic relationships between the species. In fact, anatomical analysis of 5 Sabah species ( Tillier and Bouchet 1988) reveals major differences between them, and consequently they are accommodated in two new genera Gunongia and Kionghutania . These genera are characterized by properties of the shell, radula and anatomy. We prefer not to apply the four generic names mentioned. Approximately half of the species listed below are only known by their shells, and we cannot unequivocally extend the division into four different genera over all the Sabah species. Until more phylogenetic details become apparent, we prefer to re-instate the old genus Kaliella . The genus Kaliella is typified by a species occurring in Sabah: Kaliella barrakporensis (Pfeiffer).
