Determination: HoloTYPE Chrysopa oculata var. carei 3308 No. Smith / Chrysopa oculata var carei Smith det. by RCS Type / Chrysopa oculata Say Det. P Adams / HOLOTYPE / Chrysopa oculata SAY ♀ FIDE J.A. GARLAND 1980.

Comments: Bickley (1952) noted that the “varietal names [of Chrysopa oculata ] are no longer of any value”, but did not explicitly synonymize these names. Garland (1985a) used this to conclude that the name carei “no longer represents a valid taxonomic category… and is unavailable”. This interpretation would appear to be valid according to ICZN (1999: Art. 45.6.4), as the original description suggested that this was not a distinct taxon, but an unavailable name of infrasubspecific rank: “The chief excuse for indicating this colorational form as a variety is to indicate that this is not a distinct species, but a striking form attained by the gradual disappearance of vertical markings.” ( Smith 1932). Antennae missing.
