Scale bar = 0.2 mm. Type material examined: The lectotype male of Meigen's species, designated by Cresson (1930: 131) , is labelled: "4 guttata Coll. Winth. ", "4 guttata ", (red) preserved in NMW . Two paralectotypes : a female is labelled: "4 guttata Coll. Winth ", " PARATYPE Ephydra 4- guttata Meigen " (blue) and a male labelled: " TYPE Ephydra 4- guttata Meigen " preserved in NMW . The lectotype male of Boheman's species (in good condition), herein selected, labelled: "Sc. br.", "Bhm." (all handwriting), and ten paralectotypes ( 8 males and 2 females ) bearing the same labels, are preserved in NHRS ; a male paralectotype , pinned directly (specimen in moderate condition, mesonotum darkened by liquid, right midleg lacking), labelled: "Sc br.", "Eph. planiceps Bohem. Sc [SG]", " Ephydra planiceps Bhm. " (all handwriting) preserved in MZLU . Other material examined: BELGIUM : De Panne , 8. VIII. 1928 , M. Goetghebuer , 3 ♂ , 3 ♀ ( RBINS ) . CZECHIA : Praha-Holešovice , river bank, 200 m . , 50.07N / 14.26E , 10.VII.1983 , M. Barták , 1 ♀ ( CULSP ) . GERMANY : Ins. Usedom Ahlbeck , 14–22. VIII. 1928 , H. Zerny , 1 ♂ ( NMW ); Wersen , 28. Andersson , 20. VI. 1975 , 1 ♀ , 7. VIII. 1971 , 1 ♂ ( MZLU ). Type localities: Meigen (1830) did not cite a locality for his type , but it is probably in the vicinity of Hamburg , the home-town of Wilhelm von Winthem, who collected the type specimens. Boheman (1853) gave Sjöbo in Sweden as the type locality (coordinates 55°38'5.3"N , 13°42'12.1"E ). FIGURES 25–26. Head with a part of thorax of Scatophila quadriguttata (Meigen, 1830) , antero-oblique view. 25. female. 26. male (Belgium: De Panne; RBINS). Scale bar = 0.2 mm. Diagnosis. The species is closely related to S. caviceps (Stenhammar) having sexual dimorphism of facial profiles: the male has a concave face with membranous central area ( Fig. 26 ) and the female a slightly convex face ( Fig. 25 ). It is distinguished from other similar species by the mesonotum having a median brown stripe before the suture, slightly broader than space occupied by the acrostichal setae and expanding posteriorly to include the dorsocentral bristles, as well as whitish centre of scutellar disc ( Fig. 24 ) and yellow base of the wing. Male terminalia ( Fig. 27–29 ) with anterior margin of epandrium bears medial pointed projection and arcuate anterodorsal margin of the aedeagus. Distribution. Palaearctic: Austria , Belgium , Czechia , Denmark , Finland , Germany , Great Britain , Hungary , Italy , Netherlands , Poland , Russia (European Territory), Slovakia , Slovenia , Sweden . Remarks. After examination of the lectotype of Meigen's species we are satisfied that all features agree well with S. planiceps (Boheman) , which makes this species a synonym of S. quadriguttata .
