Philometra ocularis
Moravec, Ogawa, Suzuki, Miyaki &
Donai, 2002
Host:
Variola louti
(Forsskål, 1775)
(
Perciformes
:
Serranidae
).
Site of infection:
Eye cavity.
Date of collection:
14 November 2016
.
Prevalence:
1 infected/1 examined.
Specimens deposited:
Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Indonesia (MZBNa 731).
Remarks.
One anterior and one posterior part of a subgravid female of
P. ocularis
was reported from the eye cavity of a single individual
Variola louti
. This species is characterized by having four large, fleshy cephalic papillae (
Moravec
et al.
2002
,
Moravec & Justine 2005
;
Moravec 2006
). Body fragments of the subgravid females of the available specimens only provided few information for species identification. However, this species was easily recognized by having the fleshy cephalic papillae and the site inside the eye cavity, allowing species identification. In
Indonesia
,
P. ocularis
has been reported from
E. coioides
(Hamilton, 1822)
and
E. fuscoguttatus
(Forsskål, 1775)
from
Lampung
Bay by Rueckert
et al
. (2009) and from
E. ongus
(Bloch, 1790)
from Karimunjawa (
Neubert
et al
. 2016
). This species parasitizes the eye cavity of many serranid fish with
E. septemfasciatus
(Thunberg, 1793)
as the
type
host (
Moravec
et al
. 2002
). The presence of
P. ocularis
has been reported already from
V. louti
in the South Pacific Ocean by
Moravec & Justine (2005)
.
