,
sp. nov.
Figs 17, 18
, 94, 169, 191, 231
Description
.
Holotype
FEMALE. Fore wing
13.1 mm
.
Head.
Ventral tooth of mandible slightly longer than dorsal tooth. Clypeus apical area delimited by smooth border; clypeal margin with two small teeth. Antenna with 26 flagellomeres; white band with 6 flagellomeres.
Mesosoma
. Mesopleuron with fine inconspicuous pilosity, 100% of cuticular surface visible, area above level of scrobe finely strigate, area below smooth. Subalar prominence somewhat pyramidal, somewhat edged longitudinally. Sternaulus very deep, crenulated. Sulcus between sternaulus and scrobe absent. Posterior transverse carina of mesosternum absent. Lower metapleuron entirely strigate-rugulose. Propodeum: area in front of anterior transverse carina with anterior margin smooth and polished, otherwise with some rugulosity; medially without ridges extending from carina towards anterior margin. Propodeal apophyses present as distinct scale-like structures; posterior transverse carina entirely absent between and beyond apophyses. Area behind anterior transverse carinae, including behind apophyses, arcuately strigate, except smooth on small area in front of petiolar foramen. Fore wing in
Fig. 191
; vein 3-Cu 1.57 length of 4-Cu. Hind wing in
Fig. 231
.
Metasoma
. Postpetiole medio-anteriorly with weak but distinct subcircular concavity; dorsolateral and median dorsal carinae absent; petiolar spiracles in dorsal view somewhat prominent. Ovipositor 1.29 length of hind tibia. Apex of lower valve with 15 teeth.
Color
. Head and mesosoma main color black, both widely covered by pale yellow areas; metasoma mostly orange, basally black. Lateral pattern as in
Fig. 17
. Orbital band widely interrupted between 1–2 h and at malar space; width on supra-antennal area and temple about 0.2 of interocular distance, ending abruptly and clearly cut at temple (as in
Fig. 154
), ventrally covering nearly entire width of gena, almost reaching occipital carina, dorsally tapering and disappearing (as in
Fig. 17
). Base of mandible pale yellow. Clypeus apical area and clypeal sulcus laterally black; main area of clypeus, clypeal sulcus dorsally and entire supraclypeal area pale yellow.
Mesosoma
pattern of large pale yellow spots as in
Fig. 17
; speculum entirely yellow; scrobe and space between it and pleural sulcus black. Pronotum dorsally along anterior margin, except lateral corner, with wide yellow stripe from side to side, not dorsally interrupted; laterally on dorsal margin with elongate yellow spot. Propleuron postero-lateral margin pale yellow. Mesosternum posteriorly with narrow medio-longitudinal yellow stripe (
Fig. 169
). Mesoscutum centrally, at level of tegula, with large oval yellow spot. Axillar carina except dorsal edge, scutellum and postscutellum, pale yellow. Propodeum as in
Figs 17–18
(
paratype
from Mangaratiba,
Brazil
); longitudinal yellow stripe extending from central part to margin of petiolar foramen, narrowing from anterior to posterior end. Fore coxa pale yellow, except mesally black and apico-laterally with small orange spot; mid coxa light orange (255,124,049), except basally narrowly pale yellow; hind coxa, trochanter, trochantellus and femur light orange, except femur apical 0.2 black; fore trochanter mostly pale yellow; mid trochanter and trochantellus yellowish brown; fore and mid femora dorsally and laterally black, except basal end yellowish brown, ventrally and mesally light yellow on fore femur, light orange to yellow on mid femur; fore tibia yellow, mid and hind tibia deep yellow (255,204,000), darker on hind tibia; fore and mid t1 from yellowish basally to dark brown apically, fore and mid t2–5 black; hind t1–4 from yellowish brown at basal end of t1 to pale yellow t4; t5 black. Metasoma dorsally (Fig. 94): Petiole basally pale yellow, then mostly black, apically with large whitish spot; T2 basally black, otherwise orange, traces of yellow apico-medially; T3 medio-basally blackish, otherwise from basally orange to apically light orange; T4–8 light orange; T3–7 apical margin yellow, very narrow on T2–3, wide on T4–6. T1–7 lateral margin partially to entirely whitish.
Morphological variation
. Fore wing 8.0–
14.6 mm
. Ovipositor 1.26–1.44 length of hind tibia. Antenna with 26–28 flagellomeres, except smallest specimen (from Jundiaí, 08.VI) with 25; white band with 5–8, starting at about apical half of flagellomere V or at flagellomere VI. Mesosternum fully black, without posterior yellow stripe, or triangular yellow spot replacing stripe. Yellow on propodeum along pleural carina restricted to posterior 0.3–0.6. T2–3 fully orange. T2–6 apical yellow absent. Two specimens from Jundiaí do Sul have meso and metapleuron and propodeum with main color orange instead of black. Speculum not entirely yellow, with black occupying 50-70% of its area.
MALE. Similar to female, except as follows. Antenna with 29 flagellomeres; white band with 8, starting with entirely white flagellomere IX. Sculpturing much weaker than on female, with tendency to smooth. Propodeum anterior area on specimen from
Bahia
with yellow spot centrally. Mesosternum on specimen from
Espírito Santo
orange, without posterior yellow stripe; specimen from
Bahia
with triangular white spot instead of yellow stripe. Metasoma main color dusty yellow (255,224,101) instead of light orange; fore and mid legs mostly dusty yellow; hind leg with same overall color but much lighter than on female, apex of tibia and base of t1 dark brown.
Comments
.
Very similar to
D. crassipes
, from which it is isolated by having the metasoma orange (
vs.
black with yellow stripes) and hind coxa unicolorous (
vs.
distinctly tricolor). These two species occur sympatrically, e.g., in the Reserva Biológica do Tinguá,
Rio de Janeiro
,
Brazil
, and therefore do not represent geographical variations of a same species.
Otherwise, both male and female of
D. elegans
are easily recognized by the pattern of yellow marks on the propodeum, with a wide medio-longitudinal stripe and with yellow along pleural carina, usually along its entire length (
Fig. 18
), but present at least on posterior 0.3. This pattern is repeated only in
D. crassipes
.
