Distribution and habitat
:—This species is widely distributed in South America, occurring in
Argentina
(provinces of
Jujuy
and
Salta
),
Bolivia
(departments of
Chuquisaca
,
Cochabamba
,
La Paz
, and
Santa Cruz
), and
Brazil
(
Distrito Federal
and states of
Bahia
,
Minas Gerais
,
Rio de Janeiro
,
São Paulo
,
Paraná
,
Santa Catarina
, and
Rio Grande do Sul
) (
Fig. 2
).
Lucilia adpressa
occurs in different
types
of vegetation, such as
Restinga
(coastal vegetation on sandy soils),
campo limpo
(dry open grassland),
campo de altitude
(high altitude grassland) (
Monge & Semir 2022
), and montane forest (
Hind 2011
).
FIGURE 2.
Geographical distribution of
Lucilia adpressa
.
Nomenclatural and Taxonomic Notes
:—
Lucilia adpressa
was first treated in the genus
Oligandra
Lessing (1832: 123)
(
O. lycopodioides
and
O. lucilioides
) because it has heterogamous capitula with female florets outnumbering a few perfect florets (or morphologically perfect and functionally staminate florets) or homogamous capitula with only female florets (
Freire 1989
,
Loeuille
et al.
2013
). However, when facing the impossibility of differentiating
Oligandra
and
Lucilia
Cassini (1817: 32)
on the sexuality criterion,
Freire (1989)
synonymized these genera, providing the combination
L. lycopodioides
.
Although this species is clearly recognized through Vellozo’s plates, this name was historically overlooked. We speculate that the name of Vellozo’s work itself,
Florae Fluminensis
, which refers to the state of Rio the Janeiro, eventually baffled the taxonomists. The first attempt to synonymize
Chrysocoma adpressa
under
Vernonia monticola
was made by
Candolle (1836)
, followed by
Sampaio & Peckolt (1943)
. Recently,
Pastore
et al.
(2021)
provided evidence that many names in
Florae Fluminensis
had their origin in the state of São Paulo, including its savanna vegetation, with this being the case of
Chrysocoma adpressa
Vellozo (1829: 332)
. Although the original locality given by
Vellozo (1829: 332)
for this species was “Habitat locis, mensibusque floret supra laudatis”,
Vellozo (1829)
gave similar references to the six names before
C. adpressa
in the FF sequences until
Chrysocoma horizontalis
Vellozo (1829: 329)
on page 329, which indicates “
Campis apricis mediterraneis
floret Nov”. The latter reference was interpreted by
Pastore
et al.
(2021)
as savanna vegetation in the municipality of
Cunha
, São Paulo. In a recent field expedition, we collected this species, which was rarely collected in the municipality of
Cunha
after Vellozo’s historical expeditions. We are choosing here the original parchment plate of
Florae Fluminensis
(mss1198657_039) kept at Biblioteca Nacional, Rio de Janeiro, as the
lectotype
, and our own collection (
G.M. Antar et al. 3878
[CTBS]), made in the supposed
type
locality of the species (
Cunha
, São Paulo), as the epitype of the name
Chrysocoma adpressa
.
The original materials of
Oligandra lycopodioides
and
O. lucilioides
were not found in the Lessing herbarium in KW (
N. Shiyan
comm. pers.), but
syntypes
of both names are kept in P instead and the specimens P03617783 and P03617779 were, respectively, chosen here as a
lectotype
and an isolectotype of the name
O. lycopodioides
. Therefore, the
neotype
chosen by
Freire (1989)
(
Smith
&
Reitz
10038
US
[
US
01736238]) is superseded here. The
lectotype
of the name
Lucilia flagelliformis
was chosen in accordance with the protologue and specimen and maintains Weddell’s original notes. The
lectotype
of the name
Hymenopholis imbricata
was chosen based on one of Gardner’s specimens in K and maintains his original annotations. Finally, the
lectotype
of the name
Lucilia glomerata
was chosen based on Regnell’s specimen in S and maintains his original notes. In the specimen selected as a
lectotype
of the name
Lucilia glomerata
there is a handwritten note made by
Dr. Susana E. Freire
confirming the specimen as to the collector and collection number; however, she emphasizes that the name of the locality is different, in the protologue it appears with ‘Pedra Branca’ while on the specimen as ‘Caldas’.
