Type Material.
Lectotype
(MCZ
No.
2818): “Col.”, indicating that it was collected in
Colorado
, and “Horn Coil. H 8279” “
N. aequalis
H.”.
Specific Epithet.
The Latin adjective “
aequalis
” means like, same, uniform. This could refer to the topographically even elytral intervals, or the almost uniform rows of fine setae on the elytra, which are characteristic features of this species.
Diagnosis.
The combination of having all elytral intervals equally convex, the alternate intervals not raised above the even intervals, the thin, semierect, acute setae in rows on all elytral intervals, and the coarse rugose-tuberculate surface of the pronotum, with tubercles visible through the vestiture, distinguish specimens of
P. aequalis
from all other species of
Panscopus
with the exception of
P. longus
. The latter and
P. aequalis
can be separated by the characters given in the key.
Redescription.
Females: Length
6.6–8.7 mm
(
n
= 10); width across elytra
2.6–3.5 mm
(
n
= 10). Males of this species are unknown.
Color:
Grey to grey-brown.
Head:
Transverse impression at base of frons slight; frons and rostrum apparently nearly continuous in lateral view; vestiture of frons and rostrum of dense, overlapping grey scales and decumbent, stout, blunt setae; nasal plate indistinct; nasal carina obvious, v-shaped.
Antennae:
Scape short, extending to only anterior 1/4 of eye, with dense vestiture of scales and coarse setae; integument obscured over most of length.
Pronotum:
Approximately 1/10 wider than long, lateral margins gently rounded; median longitudinal sulcus incomplete and indistinct, more obvious in anterior half; dorsal surface coarsely rugose; vestiture of overlapping grey scales and scattered, decumbent setae. Elytra: broadly oval in dorsal view, combined width approximately 1/2 wider than pronotum, and approximately 72% of elytra length; declivity in lateral view, broadly, continuously rounded to reflexed apex; all elytral intervals equally slightly convex, each interval with complete row or partially double row of semi-erect, fine, acute setae; serial punctures each with scale, scales of serial punctures oval, in some slightly angular apically; elsewhere vestiture of pale grey scales or with patches of beige, overlapping, striate scales.
Legs:
Tibiae 1, 2, and 3 with row of stout spines on ventral edge in distal 1/3, more pronounced on tibiae 1 and 2; tibia 3 slightly bent, corbellar area closed.
Abdomen:
Ventrite 1 of females slightly convex at middle; ventrites with vestiture of grey scales similar to those of dorsum.
Genitalia:
Females (
Figs 23
,
49
): Sternum VIII (spiculum ventrale) with apical expansion approximately 1/3 its length; coxites angular in dorsal view; vagina membranous, with pair of crescent-shaped sclerites near confluence with common oviduct; spermatheca sickle-shaped, broad, tapered toward apex in distal 1/2.
Life History.
Of the
47 specimens
examined that bear collection dates on labels, most were collected in May and June, a lesser number in July and August, and a few in March and April.
Plant Associations.
Plant associations taken from label data are as follows:
19 specimens
from
Artemisia rothrockii
A. Gray
,
four specimens
from rabbitbush (
Chrysothamnus
sp.
,
Asteraceae
),
four specimens
from rose (
Rosa
sp.
), three from
Salix
sp.
, and one from each of
P. tremuloides
and alfalfa (
Medicago sativa
L.,
Fabaceae
).
Geographical Distribution.
This species, of the Basin and Range region of interior western North America, exhibits the broadest range, both geographically and altitudinally, of any species of
Panscopus
. The range of
P. aequalis
is bounded in the west by populations in eastern and northern
California
, eastern
Oregon
and
Washington
, and the dry valleys of southern
British Columbia
, extending east across southern
Alberta
,
Saskatchewan
, and southwestern
Manitoba
, to
North Dakota
,
Montana
,
Idaho
,
Wyoming
,
Kansas
(doubtfully),
Colorado
,
Utah
, and
Nevada
(
Map 24
). Altitudinal records extend from
910 m
near Strathmore in southern
Alberta
to
3,200 m
on the arid east side of the Sierra
Nevada
of
California
. Altitudinal records from localities in
Idaho
,
Montana
,
Wyoming
, and
Oregon
vary from
1,520 to 2,290 m
. An isolated record is from
2,900 m
in the
Ruby Mountains
of northeastern
Nevada
.
Chorological Affinities.
The range of this species overlaps completely the range of
P. squamifrons
.
Material Examined.
In
addition to the
type
material listed above, approximately
525 specimens
were examined.
