Atopsyche Banks (Trichoptera, Hydrobiosidae): New species, redescription, and new records Author Gomes, Victor De Andrade Author Calor, Adolfo Ricardo text Zootaxa 2019 2019-03-18 4567 3 567 579 journal article 28339 10.11646/zootaxa.4567.3.8 d4bcde34-1a74-42bf-a7f6-bccdc7664fc0 1175-5326 2599103 F5199C87-D0D4-485C-89A3-7193FE475026 Atopsyche ( Atopsaura ) japi Gomes & Calor , new species Figures 3 , 6 Diagnosis. This new species belongs to the A . ( Atopsaura ) longipennis Group as indicated by the apicomesal projection of the first article of each inferior appendage. Atopsyche ( Atopsaura ) japi n. sp. is similar to A . ( Atopsaura ) huamachucu Schmid 1989 , but can be distinguished by the following characters: The middorsal invagination of each parapod is deeper in the new species, the upcurved aedeagus is shorter in the new species, and the dorsal process of the phallic apparatus is shorter in the new species. The male of this new species can be recognized also by the apicoventral projection of the first article of each inferior appendage being knife-like with an invagination at the lateral base, by the “beaks” of the phallotheca each having a well-developed flange, and in the dorsal process of the phallic apparatus being almost as long as the phallotheca and upcurved at the apex. Description. Length of each forewing 6.0 mm (n = 1). Overall body color light brown. Frons and vertex of head with light brown setae. Antennal scapes brown with brown setae; pedicels light brown, basal flagellomeres light brown, apical flagellomeres brown yellowish. Maxillary palp segments 1 and 2 with light brown setae. Dorsum of thorax with light brown setae. Forewing venation complete ( Fig. 3A ); R1 forked apically. Hind wings each ( Fig. 3B ) having R1 merging with Sc apically; 1A arising from Cu2 basally and merging with Cu2 apically. Sterna VI and VII each with posteromesal projection; anterior projection slightly longer than sternum VI, and posterior projection shorter than anterior, about half as long as sternum VII. Genitalia. Segment IX longitudinally long, its ventral anterior and posterior margins straight and subparallel in lateral view ( Fig. 6A ). Proctiger vertically shorter anteriorly, apex nearly truncate in lateral view ( Fig. 6A ). Parapods vertically tall, each with strong middorsal invagination, apicodorsoal margin serrate, ventral margin undulated in lateral view ( Fig. 6A ). Preanal appendages short, rounded in lateral and dorsal view ( Figs. 6A, 6D ). Filipods absent. Inferior appendages each with first article thick, slightly constricted apically, with apicomesal projection rounded and about half as long and half as thick as second article in lateral view ( Fig. 6A ), knife-like, constricted and incised at lateral base in ventral view ( Fig. 6B ). Phallic apparatus with phallotheca tall basally, its “beaks” rounded apically and each with lateral flap; long curved dorsal process arising anteriorly and about as long as phallotheca in lateral and dorsal view ( Figs. 6C, 6E ); aedeagus shorter than phallotheca and upcurved in lateral view ( Fig. 6C ). Female and immatures. Unknown. Holotype . The name of this new species refers to the type locality, Serra do Japi, a mountain range with a remaining fragment of Atlantic Forest in southeastern São Paulo State, Brazil . Distribution. Brazil ( São Paulo ).
