Pedinotus pardalotus
Marsh
(female, holotype). A, Habitus, lateral view. B, Head and mesosoma, lateral view. C, Head and mesoscutum, dorsal view. D, Metasoma, dorso-lateral view.
Redescription
. Female. Body length 4.0–
6.5 mm
; fore wing length 4.0–5.0mm.
Head width (dorsal view) 1.6–1.7 × its median length, 1.3 × width of mesoscutum. Head narrowed behind eyes. Eyes 2.7–3.0 × longer than temple (dorsal view). Ocelli medium-sized, arranged in triangle with base 1.2 × its sides; posterior ocelli oval and same size as rounded anterior ocellus. POL 0.8–1.0 × Od, about 0.4 × OOL. Eye 1.15–1.20 × higher than broad. Malar space about 0.3 × height of eye, 0.6–0.7 × basal width of mandible. Face convex, its width 0.7–0.8 × height of eye and 0.9–1.0 × height of face and clypeus combined. Hypoclypeal depression width almost equal to the shortest distance from edge of depression to eye, 0.5–0.6 × width of face.
Antenna slender, weakly filiform, with 31–40 antennomeres. Scape 1.4–1.6 × longer than its maximum width. First flagellomere 5.0–6.0 × longer than its apical width, 1.2 × longer than second flagellomere. Penultimate segment about 4.0 × longer than maximum width, 0.9 × as long as apical segment.
Mesosoma 2.0–2.1 × longer than its maximum height. Pronotum very short, declivous and almost straight dorsally (lateral view), with very fine submedian pronotal carina (dorsal view). Median lobe of mesoscutum protruding forwards and strongly convex (lateral view), its anterior margin very weakly convex, with distinct medio-anterior depression and deep and wide medio-longitudinal sulcus in anterior half (dorsal view). Median length of mesoscutum almost equal to its maximum width. Notauli entirely rugose. Prescutellar depression (scutellar sulcus) crenulate-rugulose, 0.30–0.35 × as long as scutellum. Precoxal sulcus (sternaulus) deep, crenulated, running along anterior 0.7–0.8 of lower part of mesopleuron.
Wings. Fore wing 3.8–4.0 × longer than its maximum width. Vein r (first radial abscissa) arising from or weakly behind middle of pterostigma. Vein 3RSa (second radial abscissa) 1.6–2.0 × longer than vein r (first radial abscissa), about 0.3 × as long as the straight vein 3RSb (third radial abscissa), 1.1–1.3 × longer than vein 2RS (first radiomedial). Second submarginal (radiomedial) cell 2.1–2.4 × longer than its maximum width, 0.75–0.80 × as long as rather narrow first subdiscal (brachial) cell. Vein 1m-cu (recurrent) weakly antefurcal, subparallel to vein 1M (basal). Distance from postfurcal vein cu-a (nervulus) to vein 1M (basal) 0.4–0.6 × vein cu-a (nervulus) length. Hind wing vein M+CU (first abscissa of mediocubital) 0.35–0.40 × as long as 1M (second abscissa). Vein m-cu (recurrent) distinctly antefurcal, almost straight.
Legs. Fore tarsus rather long, about 1.5 × longer than fore tibia. Hind femur 3.3–3.5 × longer than wide. Hind tarsus 1.10–1.15 × longer than hind tibia. Second segment of hind tarsus 0.40–0.45 × as long as basitarsus, 1.30– 1.45 × longer than fifth segment (without pretarsus).
Metasoma 1.1–1.2 × longer than head and mesosoma combined. First tergite weakly, almost evenly and sublinearly widened towards apex. Length of first tergite 0.9–1.0 × its maximum width; maximum width 1.6–1.7 × its minimum (basal) width. First and second tergites not fused. Median length of second tergite 0.40–0.45 × its basal width, 0.7–0.8 × length of third tergite; maximum median length of second tergite 1.3–1.4 × its minimum sublateral length (at level of breaks). Suture between second and third tergites entirely deep and rather wide, distinctly sinuate, crenulated, with distinct sublateral breaks. Third tergite with distinct and rather wide transverse crenulated sulcus in basal third. Ovipositor sheath 0.6–0.9 × as long as body, 1.0–1.5 × as long as metasoma, 0.7– 0.8 × as long as fore wing.
Sculpture and pubescence. Vertex densely and rather distinctly punctate; frons densely striate with fine rugulosity; face densely rugose-areolate with granulation, with additional striation laterally. Mesoscutum anteriorly smooth, finely punctate laterally, with wide, subrectangular and coarsely rugose area in medioposterior 0.6–0.7. Mesopleuron in upper 0.5–0.7 punctate, smooth below. Metapleuron mainly smooth, coarsely rugose in posterior 0.3. Propodeum with areas distinctly deliniated by carinae; basolateral areas at least partly smooth, but with rugulosity along carinae; areola narrow and long, extending to most part length of propodeum, rugulose; basomedian carina short, 0.3–0.5 × as long as anterior fork of areola. Hind coxa and femur mainly smooth, coxa finely reticulate-punctate basodorsally. First metasomal tergite areolate-rugose medialy and apically, smooth in mediobasal 0.3–0.4 and basolateral 0.5–0.7, with distinct and often complete longitudinal carina. Second tergite with median area striate-rugose and lateral areas mostly striate. Third tergite basally very densely and small areolate-punctate partly with striation, smooth in apical half. Fourth to sixth tergites densely and distinctly (but finely on sixth tergite) punctate and sometimes with fine striation in basal 0.5–0.3, smooth on remaining parts. Vertex, most part of mesoscutum (except anterior area), most of pronotum posteriorly and mainly mesopleuron (except lower third) in dense or very dense, relatively long and pale yellow or golden setae. Hind tibia dorsally with sparse, semi-erect and medium length pale setae, length of these setae 0.5–0.7 × maximum width of hind tibia.
Colour. Body varying from mainly dark brown to black mottled by reddish brown to mostly reddish brown mottled by honey yellow. Head dark brown or black with yellow eye orbits, temples whitish yellow at least on wide area, face yellow or yellowish brown with brown subtriangular spot or vertical line medially. Palpi white. Antenna brown or black, scape and pedicel yellow or brownish yellow with brown lateral stripe. Mesosoma entirely or mostly almost black to reddish brown, with sometimes pale spots on pronotum ventrally, propleuron, posterior mesoscutum and metapleuron. Legs light yellow marked with dark spots on all trochanters, femora and tibiae, hind coxa mostly brown or black, all tarsi frequently brown or dark brown. Metasomal tergites brown to black medially, laterally on rather wide areas and all sternites yellow to whitish yellow. Ovipositor sheath entirely brown. Wings faintly and evenly infuscate. Pterostigma and veins dark brown to almost black.

Comparative diagnosis
. This species belongs to the morphological group with widely setose mesoscutum and vertex.
Pedinotus pardalotus
Marsh
is similar to
P. botocudo
sp. nov.
; differences between these species are shown after description of the last taxon.
Comments
. Examination of the
type
specimens of
Pedinotus pardalotus
,
L. marshi
and
P. fasciatus
and numerous additional specimens collected in
French Guiana
led us to conclude that there is no morphological evidence to separate the above three species. Therefore, the last two names are here synonymised with
P. pardalotus
Marsh, 2002
(
syn. nov.
).
